Mancos Days was the kick-off weekend for the Mancos school mill levy project, when the mill levy committee will pump up their efforts to get the word out in town and the surrounding areas about the importance of the question to be on the ballot in November. On the Nov. 6 ballot, the Mancos School District will be asking for $276,000 per year for the next seven years. This money will go to maintain the quality teachers and programs that are already in place at the school.

Sheriff Jerry Martin said that the Pick n’ Hoe celebration had been very successful, but added that dogs were a problem. There were several dog fights and two youngsters were bitten July 4.

“I think we ought to consider banning dogs in Weber Park on July 4,” he said.

Ouray County’s very own solar car team, Sunshine Mountain Traveler, made up of local students from grades nine through 12, had a great outing at the 2012 Solar Car Challenge and placed fourth among over 20 teams last week. The teams came from all corners of the continental United States and Puerto Rico.

The objective of the race was to accumulate the most laps over the four-day period. It required not just speed, but endurance. Despite the hot and humid weather, the Sunshine Mountain Team accumulated a total of 229 laps.

Gunnison Sage Grouse transplants may be coming to San Juan County. Guy Wallace of the Division of Wildlife Resources, told the County Commission on July 23, that the opportunity to transplant Gunnison Sage Grouse from Colorado has been given to the county. The transplant is part of a proposal by the Nature Conservancy, where additional land will be purchased to improve the grouse habitat. If the proposal is approved, San Juan County will receive 45 birds — 15 this fall, 15 in the spring and 15 in the fall of 2013.

Naturita law enforcement officers are looking for the owner of an auto repair business in Naurita following a shooting recently.

The man they are looking for is named Ronald McGuffee, 47. He is described at 6’2” and 230 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes and may be riding a 2010 black Harley Davidson.

Authorities did not release the name of the shooting victim and only said the victim was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital by Life Flight helicopter.

The Garrett Carothers Memorial Freestyle Motocross Exhibition was held at the San Miguel Basin Fair on Saturday, July 21. The four spectacular riders mesmerized the crowd with their high flying motorcycle aerobatics, which were made more difficult by the windy weather conditions.

And in other Nucla-related news, a public event was held dubbed the “Atomic Ice Cream Social” in Grand Junction and another event in Montrose introduced a geologist who painted a gloomy picture of the financial prospects for the proposed Pinon Ridge Mill.
