Business game class offered by SCCC
Melinda Greens Introduction to Business class (BUS 115) at Southwest Colorado Community College this fall semester will offer an award-winning computer business simulation game called Any Business. Each student will choose a business to start and then make the decisions that a real-world entrepreneur would make including determining the product type, product features, pricing, marketing and sales, human resources, customer psychographics, currency, unexpected events and more.
The class meets from 9:45 to 11 a.m. each Monday beginning Aug. 13. In addition to business majors at SCCC, the class is also open to budding entrepreneurs.
Students will utilize a textbook to learn business basics and will then apply what theyve learned by playing the business simulation game. The objective will be to operate a successful business by manufacturing and marketing a product line while competing with other businesses managed by human and/or computer players. Students will monitor revenue, profitability, market share, brand value, equity, etc.
Players will need to decide where to invest: manufacturing, research and development, human resources, sales promotion, brand advertising, price discount advertising, market research, advertising mix, etc. They will set product prices, choose their business approach to ethics and decide whether to distribute into one or more markets.
Market Research and Financial reports will be available to aid analysis and decision making, and a virtual management team will provide real-time business advice. In such a dynamic business environment, players will manage their own strategies while monitoring competitive positioning, actions and other market forces that arise.
Registration for the class is now open, and interested students are urged to register by Aug. 1 since class size is limited. For more information, contact Green at Melinda.Green@pueblocc.edu or call the SCCC at 564-6200 to speak with an advisor.
Any Business is a product that earned a Gold Omni Award for GoVenture, an educational games and simulations company. It is funded by a grant from the Colorado Community College System to introduce educational games as a tool to get students more involved directly in their learning.
