With a heavy heart, I share that the trustees have voted to “demolish” our gem of a playground.
I want to share my thoughts of how I see things, so you can understand that this playground never really stood a chance. This is the unfortunate piece of politics, bureaucracy and long-standing loyalties in our community.
From the night that it was voted to be closed due to safety reasons, some took strong positions and stayed there throughout this process. It is important to state that the trustees have been voted in by you and me. They are there to be our voices, to validate us and to explore all options. This didn’t happen.
At the December meeting, the mayor read the worst part of Leathers assessment instead of sharing all facets of it. And then he reread an extremely one-sided letter for the second time throughout this process. And because many of the trustees positioned themselves the night they decided to close it, our playground didn’t have a fighting chance.
We live in a very fearful and liability driven world. And many in positions of power, practice and make decisions in this fear. This is what I witnessed, and that is a shame because I most certainly feel it holds our great community back!
And it most certainly did for our unique and treasured playground. What I want you all to understand is that so many of us tried.
