The Montezuma County Commissioners unanimously approved two permits needed to construct a temporary asphalt plant near Mancos. The plant that will be used to provide materials for a 12-mile stretch of asphalt overlay on state Highway 160.

The decision came after a public hearing, residents said they had concerns about smoke and pollution.

Commissioner Gerald Koppenhafer said residents need maintained roads to drive on, so these permits are a necessity.

The Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management kept the monthly appointment with the Dolores County Commissioners. Debbie Kill projected images on the screen, most of the slides were geared to argue for fewer roads on the Glade. The first picture was a muddy, rutted road and Kill said that there are simply so many roads on the Glade that the Forest Service can’t afford to maintain them.

Now that the Uncompahgre River has been cleared of tires, attention has turned to the thousands of tires still buried on the property owned by Butch Gunn adjacent to Billy Creek. In the midst of the county’s ongoing enforcement action against Gunn for an unlawful rubbish dump, a state representative from Sterling, in northeast Colorado, has termed the county’s action as “hassling” Gunn, and District 58 representative Don Coram of Montrose told the Plaindealer, “I’m surprised that Ouray County has taken such a hard line.”

A new Fallen Soldier monument, honoring Sgt. 1st Class Nathan L. Winder, was recently placed in the Blanding Cemetery. Winder, a Special Forces medical sergeant from Blanding, was killed in Iraq on June 26, 2007. He is interred in Arlington National Cemetery.

San Miguel Power Association, Inc. and the Clean Energy Collective have begun construction on their one-megawatt community-owned solar project in Paradox Valley. They system is sited on seven acres in the northeast corner of Paradox Valley along U. S. Highway 90, approximately 15 miles west of Naturita, Colo.
