“Summer” — one of the many kittens up for adoption, and currently being fostered by For Pets’ Sake Humane Society members — checks out a bottle of wine. She is one of the many critters that will benefit from the Summer Wine Festival fundraiser this Saturday evening, July 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cliffrose.

For Pets’ Sake will hold its big event of the year, the Fifth Annual Summer Wine Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, at Cliffrose — Your High Desert Gardens, just east of Cortez on Highway 160. Join friends for an evening in the gardens. This event will include wines and choice beers provided by Smitty’s Liquors, appetizers, solo piano by Lee Bartley, and a silent auction featuring items and gift certificates from favorite area businesses, restaurants, artists, and vacation destinations. Tickets are $25 each or two for $40, and are available before the event at Cliffrose Gardens and at the door. All proceeds benefit the cats and dogs of Montezuma and Dolores Counties.

For Pets’ Sake Humane Society has no paid staff; the organization began in 1984 and remains an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The vast majority of the funds — 64 percent last year — raised by the group goes to spaying, neutering and other medical expenses for local dogs and cats — For Pets’ Sake pays a lot of vet bills for pet owners that can’t manage them. The group is very active and sponsors many low-cost spay and neuter clinics for pet owners. A little over 27 percent of money raised goes to cover expenses in support of the group’s active feral cat project, and a small amount — 2.5 percent — pays for food and shelter for the group’s foster animals and other needy pets.

It’s a great time for a great cause — don’t miss this highly-anticipated summer event.
