Cyclists on the Horse Gulch Trail now have a nearby repair station in case they need air in a tire or to tighten up something.
The station was installed in December at the trailhead, near East Eighth Avenue and Third Street.
Mercy Regional Medical Center paid for the $1,200 station, and it was installed by Trails 2000, a nonprofit.
“People really appreciate it,” said Trails 2000 Executive Director Mary Monroe Brown.
Work on the station started in mid-summer after David Bruzzese, Mercy’s director of public relations and marketing, had the idea for it.
Cyclists can use the stand to fix and inflate tires and make minor repairs with the wrenches, screwdrivers and tire levers that are attached to the station with cables.
“It’s designed to be very strong and sturdy,” Brown said.
It is also proving to be popular.
“We wanted to start with a very visible place that has a lot of traffic and see what the public response was,” she said.
Trails 2000 and Mercy may add one or two repair stations at other trailheads, she said.
