FRIDAY, JULY 13
An officer responded to Walmart for a shoplifter. He met with the loss prevention person who was sitting with a female who had been seen leaving the store with a laptop charging kit valued at $79.97. She had walked past the registers and was contacted outside the store in the parking lot. The female admitted that what the loss prevention person observed was true and that she did not have the money to pay for the item. When asked why she needed the laptop charger, she stated that her boyfriend had just gone to prison and she did not know where he was at. She said that she needed to look up the location of her boyfriend on the Internet and that is why she stole the charger. She was issued a summons for shoplifting.
SATURDAY, JULY 14
Several officers responded to a residence in Cortez in reference to a vehicle theft in progress. As an officer was on his way to the location, dispatch advised that the suspect had run from the scene southbound towards the high school. He was described as a young male with dark hair, approximately 5 foot, 8 inches tall with a skinny build, wearing khaki shorts and no shirt, and was approximately 14 to 16 years old. The owner of the vehicle said that she had come home and left the keys in the car and unlocked because she was just running inside for a second. While inside, she heard the car door open and close, and then the vehicle started up and then shut off very quickly. She went outside to find the youth sitting in her car, and she began yelling at him as she approached the car. The young male got out of her car and stated that someone was trying to steal her car and pointed south, saying they had run in that direction. He began to walk away from her and she grabbed his t-shirt and told him she was calling the police. The youth began to pull away from her, and his shirt ripped off and he ran. The woman wished to press charges. Police were unable to locate the suspect after a 15 to 20 minute search of the area.
Two officers were parked and facing east in a parking lot when they observed a car fail to stop at a stop sign at Main Street. They contacted the vehicle and the female driver provided a Utah drivers license and told officers that she was on her way to the town with the hot springs. An officer named off some nearby towns and she said that none of those were correct, but she could not remember the name of the town she was headed to. Officers could smell alcohol on her breath as well as other physical indicators of intoxication, plus her speech was slurred and she seemed a little confused. She said she was coming from Moab, and admitted to having had two vodka drinks. She failed voluntary roadside maneuvers and declined to undergo a blood test. She was taken into custody and charged with DUI, DUI per se, no proof of insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign. She refused to sign paperwork issued to her and was left in the care and custody of jail staff.
MONDAY, JULY 16
Two police officers responded to an apartment for a trespass. They contacted an adult male at the scene, and were asked by the tenant at the property to tell the subject that he was to leave and not return. The subject stated he understood and was given a courtesy ride to a location on S. Broadway. Approximately one hour later, officers were dispatched to Thatza Pizza to respond to an alarm that had gone off, and arrived to find the front glass doors shattered. The subject that had been dropped off nearby was located. The owner of the business went to the scene and reviewed surveillance video with officers. The male subject was observed on video as he smashed the glass doors using a metal ash tray next to the door. The same subject also was later found to have also broken into another business using a similar method of entry, a metal garbage can. A black laptop computer, a printer scanner, and a floor heater were found outside the businesss front door. Checks written to the business, bills, a phone card and several business cards were found in the pants of the suspect.
An officer pulled over an SUV that he observed approach a stop sign and fail to stop. He could smell the odor of alcohol coming from the male subjects breath and could also smell the odor of unburnt marijuana. The subject admitted to having one beer, and he denied having any marijuana and presented a medical marijuana card. The officer observed that there was a small child (6 months old) in the vehicle and the subject said that it was his and his girlfriends child. The subject failed to perform voluntary roadside maneuvers satisfactorily, and he was taken into custody. The SUV and the child were released into the custody of a woman who came to the scene. As the officer was transporting the subject to the police department, dispatch advised that his driving status came back as denied in Colorado. He tested positive for alcohol in his system, and was taken to jail. He was charged with driving while under the influence, driving under restraint (license denied), disregard/failure to stop at a stop sign, and for child abuse. He was left in the care and custody of jail staff.
An officer was at the Main Street Brewery on other business and was advised by an employee that there was a fight downstairs in the pool table room. The officer went downstairs and contacted two male subjects. One of them was lying on the floor bleeding from his forehead, and medics were asked to respond to the scene. The second male was placed in handcuffs until the officer could find out what had happened. He spoke with the male on the floor who told him that he and the other male were drinking and playing foosball and began to argue. He said that they began to wrestle around and as they were going to the floor, he hit his head on the corner of the foosball table. He stated that it was an accident and he felt like they were more horsing around than serious and did not want to press charges. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. The male in handcuffs told the officer the same version of the incident. He was checked with dispatch and found to have a warrant for his arrest from Mesa County. He was arrested and left in the care and custody of jail staff.
