July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is ‘Craving Sleep’



“Craving Sleep” is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. “Counting Sheep” will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. “Hush Little Baby” will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

Dance, ‘Dive-In’ Movie for kids at outdoor pool



The City of Cortez and the Cortez Police Department invites middle school and elementary students to the free “Dive-In” Movie on Thursday, July 19 at the Cortez outdoor swimming pool. First, there will be music at the pool from 6 to 8 p.m. where you can dance or just hang out with your friends; next, the Dive-In Movie will start at 8:30 and go to 10 p.m. Watch a movie on a huge screen from the cool comfort of the pool — bring floaties, air mattresses, pool chairs, inner tubes, or whatever floats. Since it gets cooler at night, attendees are urged to bring an extra towel or some clothes. This is a DARE-sponsored event.




Democratic Party to hold Get Together Potluck Fundraiser



The Montezuma County Democratic Party will have a “Get Together Potluck Fundraiser” on Thursday, July 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cliffrose Nursery, 27885 Hwy. 160, Cortez. A minimum $10 donation is suggested. All interested persons are welcome to attend and questions can be addressed to Ric at 565-8994.




Anger Management classes



CARS/TRC will offer a 12-week Anger Management class starting on Thursday, July 19. Classes are two hours per week. Learn the roots of your anger, learn skills to manage your feelings, learn how to prevent outbursts and improve your relationships. CARS/TRC is at 35 N. Ash St. in Cortez. Effective July 1, CARS’ new name is The Recovery Center: A Behavioral Health Organization (TRC). Call 565-4109 to set up an intake appointment.




Cortez Library July computer classes



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in July. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, July 19, a basic Word class will be taught, and on Friday, July 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library at 565-8117 or by stopping by.




‘A Night Out’ fundraiser for Bridge Emergency Shelter



A Night Out, Friday, July 20, is the Bridge Emergency Shelter’s summer fundraising event. This is the day and/or night to eat out for the shelter! There are 35 restaurants in Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos who are participating in our event this year by donating a percentage of their sales that day to the Bridge. Free t-shirts are available for 100 folks who eat out! Go as a group of friends, co-workers, or family. Eat out for the shelter on July 20! ‘Fierce Grace’ will screen at Conscious Movie Night



The Center of Light presents “Fierce Grace” at Conscious Movie Night on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 (in Dolores turn left on 11th at the Riverside Gas Station, go 1.8 miles. Look for the large sign with the dove, on the left). “Fierce Grace” documents Ram Dass remaking his life since suffering from a stroke. While the illness might have broken others, it provided Dass with a new passion: using an unexpected, uninvited challenge as a tool for spiritual transformation, and using what he learns to help others face issues of aging, death and dying. This event is free, and all are welcome. Donations are accepted and will support the Seva Foundation. Seva is a sanskrit word meaning service to others. Since 1978, Seva has been a leading innovator in building partnerships that deliver cost-effective, culturally informed health service for some of the world’s most vulnerable — including women, children and indigenous peoples. Masonic Youth Car Wash fundraiser



The Masonic Youth will hold a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on North Ash St., across from the fire station. Funds raised will help Bethel 42 of Job’s Daughters International to attend the Grand Session in Denver. The group assists hearing impaired kids in Colorado. ‘Ethical Issues in Advanced Illness’ training



Hospice of Montezuma and Life Quality Institute will sponsor a training conference “Ethical Issues in Advanced Illness” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31 at the Cortez Conference Center, 2121 E. Main St. Attendees should register by Friday, July 20. The cost is $35 for breakfast, lunch and training. Topics will include: Raising Your Ethical Antennae; Getting the most out of the Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment; and Palliative Sedation: Extreme Symptom Management or Veiled Assisted Death?

Vanishing Breed to perform at Hollywood’s Earl benefit



On Saturday, July 21, The Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host a benefit for our friend Dan Earls, who was injured in a construction accident. We will have a buffet, silent auction and live music from Hollywood favorites, Vanishing Breed. Music begins at 8 p.m. All proceeds will go to help Dan with medical bills from several surgeries. ‘Bug Zone — Transformed by our Big God’ Vacation Bible School



Montelores Baptist Church will hold its Vacation Bible School the week of Monday through Friday, July 23-27 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Free 6-week Intro to Meditation & Christian Mysticism



The Center of Light presents Intro to Meditation & Christian Mysticism starting on Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 — in Dolores turn left on 11th at the Riverside Gas Station, go 1.8 miles. Look for the large sign with the dove, on the left. This is a powerful 6-week introductory course designed for modern mystics. Classes will include teachings on the Inner Spiritual Path, Meditation, Soul, Light, Prayer, and Blessing. Time will be spent teaching the principles of meditation that will allow you to move deeper than the body, beyond thinking and emotions and into the reality of God’s peace and presence within. For Pets’ Sake Humane Society Summer Wine Festival



For Pets’ Sake will hold its fifth annual Summer Wine Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, at Cliffrose High Desert Gardens just east of Cortez on Highway 160. The evening will include wines and a few choice beers provided by Smitty’s Liquors, yummy appetizers, solo piano by Lee Bartley, and a Silent Auction featuring items and gift certificates from your favorite businesses, restaurants, artists, and vacation destinations. Tickets are $25 each or two for $40, and are available before the event at Cliffrose Gardens and at the door. All proceeds benefit the cats and dogs of Montezuma and Dolores Counties. ‘Rev It Up!’ Vacation Bible School



Lighthouse Baptist Church will hold its “Rev It Up!” Vacation Bible School on Monday, July 30 through Friday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at 11502 Hwy. 145, Cortez. This is for kids age 4 years to 6th grade, and parents are also welcome. There will be awesome games, delicious snacks, hilarious puppets, exciting bible lessons, and unbelievable prizes. Chimney Choir plays the Dolores River Brewery



The band Chimney Choir has recently returned from a European tour and will be playing a handful of Colorado mountain towns this summer. See them perform at Dolores River Brewery, 100 N. 4th St., on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. Chimney Choir skillfully interweaves genres resulting in a “folk meets world music sound, steeped in psychedelia.” All multi-instrumentalists, writers and singers, Kevin Larkin, David Rynhart and Kris Drickey change instruments (sometimes within a song) and sing in three-part harmony while balancing field recordings and computer synths with traditional acoustic instrumentation. Cortez Library August computer classes



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in August. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, Aug. 2, a class on Internet Maps and Google Earth will be held. On Friday, Aug. 10, the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center staff will teach computer classes on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including: registering with the Workforce Center; updating your Workforce registration; conducting job searches statewide; applying for unemployment insurance; resume preparation; and searching for State applications. On Thursday, Aug. 30, an Incredibly Basic Computer Skills class will be taught. This is our beginning class. If you have little or no computer skills, this is the class for you! Be a crew member at Cortez Hot Air Balloon Rendezvous



The Cortez Hot Air Balloon Rendezvous will take place at 6:30 a.m. on Friday through Sunday, Aug. 3-5, at Parque de Vida. Participating hot air balloons will be in Cortez from New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. This event is known as small-town flying at its best! This is a family event, so plan to bring along your kids and become crew for a hot air balloon — it is really a lot of fun. Be sure to wear tennis shoes and bring gloves, then get ready for a great experience. When the organizer, Cookie See, asks for crew, just step forward, and you will be assigned to a balloon. Noted Buddhist teacher, author to speak



Noted Buddhist teacher and international best-selling author Lama Surya Das will speak in Durango on Saturday, August 4 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. The event from 6 to 9 p.m. includes book signing and sales as well as a silent auction and Lama Surya’s presentation on Buddha Standard Time, which is the title of his latest book. Tickets for the event are $25 for adults and $18 for students. Summer Enrichment Programs at Medicine Horse



Medicine Horse Equine Therapy Center are holding their final Summer Enrichment Program of this season. Kids ages 7 through 12 will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. The advanced skills camp runs from Monday through Friday, Aug. 6-10. Camps go from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $120 and space is limited to six kids. Final class of ‘Marketing for Smarties’ business series



The third class of the Marketing for Smarties Series will take place at the Welcome Center in Cortez, 928 E. Main St., on Wednesday, Aug. 15. Classes are from 1 to 5 p.m. This third installment of the 3-part series breaks marketing down into a step-by-step process, and helps to resolve a lot of the problems many small businesses encounter when trying to effectively promote their products and services.
