The Cortez community will come together for the annual Messiah Sing-in on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at Cortez Methodist Church.

The program aims to make this famous choral work accessible to everyone during the holiday season.

The Messiah Sing-in is a chance for any Cortez resident to sing the “Hallelujah chorus,” as well as a few other pieces from Handel’s “Messiah.”

“It is an opportunity for community members to sing without rehearsing for months,” Patricia Faulkner, organizer of the event, said. “They can come that night and join in.”

The musicians in the orchestra have been practicing for months, alongside soloists, but the sing-in gives those who do not have the time to rehearse a chance to participate.

The oldest member of the orchestra, 93-year-old Joe Curry, will play the violin in the sing-in.

People who want to join the choir do not have to sign up in advance, but Faulkner asked that they show up at 5:30 p.m.

Faulkner emphasized the community aspect of the event. She said she encourages everyone who can to show up and participate.

“It’s about participation, not perfection,” she said.

There will be a reception after the performance.

The event is free and open to the public. The group accepts donations.
