McDonald’s manager Valorie McClure holds ice cream coupons offered to students in the Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 School District who participate in the “Readers are Leaders” program.

The Cortez McDonald’s has made a commitment to rewarding local students for academic achievements.

“Last year, McDonald’s supported education in our area with a program called ‘Readers are Leaders,’” Trina Lee, district English-language learners coordinator, said in an email. “We used the bookmark/Happy Meal coupon to give our students as they reached reading goals.”

This year, McDonald’s is giving out ice cream cone coupons for students in the Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 School District.

McDonald’s franchise owner Brett Bronson partnered with the district to support students and education. Bronson wanted to provide an incentive for kids, according to Lee.

The coupons are being handed out by district schools at their discretion.

“The schools give them out periodically when (students) reach a certain level of reading or are working really hard,” Lee said.
