Allegretto will perform and teach harmonica workshop



Learn to play the harmonica instantly! “Best of the West” award-winner, Gary Allegretto will perform and teach a unique harmonica workshop to folks of all ages at noon on Saturday, June 30, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. An internationally-touring musician, Allegretto is also the director of the award-winning nonprofit humanitarian organization “Harmonikids” that provides the joy of music to children worldwide. He will first perform a concert, and then will instruct audience members — adults and kids aged 5 and older — how to play harmonica immediately with his quick-learn method; no prior musical experience is needed. Allegretto’s methods are guaranteed, and audience members will leave knowing how to play four songs. The cost is $20 and includes a top-quality Hohner harmonica and music booklet in addition to the expert instruction and performance.

‘Harmonicowboy’ will perform at Western Belle’s House Concert



Gary Allegretto, “The Harmonicowboy” is still on to perform on Saturday, June 30 at Western Belle’s House Concert Series at 32229 Road P, Mancos. Come at 7 p.m. for a potluck (bring your favorite dish to share), and music begins at 8 p.m. Allegretto has received extensive honors for his music, including a Best of the West Award, two WMA nominations and two Grammy Award considerations. True West Magazine declares he’s “sure to impress the cowboy hat off your head!” Don’t miss a chance to see him while he’s in the area. Tickets are $15. Donors will get free movie ticket at mobile blood drive



United Blood Services will hold a mobile blood drive from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30 at the Fiesta Twin Movie Theater, 23 W. Main St. in Cortez. Women’s retreat offers fellowship at Methodist Church



The women’s group of the United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park, Cortez, invites all interested women from the community to attend a half-day retreat/time away, on Saturday, June 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be a time of meditation, fellowship and fun as we sing hymns, read scripture, discuss topics such as the Kingdom of God and the Lord is My Shepherd, in small and large groups. ‘Impressions of India’ photography show



Join Barbara Grist at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, for the opening of “Impressions of India” a colorful collection of photographs from her recent exploration. This art opening and showing will be hosted at Jill Lawson Yoga Studio, 100 N. 4th St., in Dolores. Sit back, relax, and take a journey through India during this inspiring slideshow and talk. Patriotic service will celebrate Independence Day



With the fourth day of July, Independence Day, meaning so much to the citizens of the United States, because of what occurred on that date in 1776, there will be a special patriotic service at the Lifeway Baptist Church, 601 N. Dolores Rd., Cortez on Sunday, July 1 at 5:30 p.m. There will be a special emphasis in this service with patriotic subjects being the theme for the speakers, and the music will also consist of patriotic songs. The Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen will present guest speakers, Doctors Clay and Petra Sullwold on the topic “Chiropractic Care for our Equine Athletes” on Tuesday, July 3 at 7 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Davidson history presentation on ‘Early Development of Cortez’



The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society is pleased to present Dale Davidson on Tuesday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St., to discuss Stephen Smith and the Early Development of Cortez. Stephen Smith came to Cortez in 1888 at the age of 23 and remained here for most of his life. When he first arrived he was employed by the investors who developed Cortez and the water diversion from the Dolores River. Over 400 of the business letters Smith wrote between 1891 and 1896 have been preserved and will be the focus of Dale’s presentation. Dale came to the Cortez area 25 years ago when he became the lead archaeologist for the BLM’s Monticello, Utah office. He has been involved in the Hawkins Preserve. July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is ‘Craving Sleep’



“Craving Sleep” is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. “Lullabies” is the subject on Thursday, July 5, Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7. “Night Lights” will be discussed on Thursday, July 12, Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. “Counting Sheep” will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. “Hush Little Baby” will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

Cortez Library July computer classes



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in July. All classes start at 1 p.m.

On Thursday, July 5, there will be a class on Internet shopping. On Fridays, July 13 and 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. On Thursday, July 19, a Basic Word class will be taught. All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library at 565-8117 or by stopping by.




For Pets’ Sake holds Pennies for Pets at the Farmers Market



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society is seeking help from the community for their fundraiser Pennies For Pets on Saturday morning, July 7, at the Cortez Farmers Market in the Montezuma County Courthouse parking lot, 109 W. Main St.

Everyone who cares about animals can bring their pennies (nickels, dimes and quarters, too) to the For Pets’ Sake table at the Market’s Community Booth. You can even bring dollars! All donations are used to help the cats and dogs of Montezuma and Dolores counties live healthier and happier lives! Young Eagles Flight Experience



Cortez Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1451 has scheduled a Young Eagles Flight Experience for children from the ages of 8 to 17 on Saturday, July 7 at the Cortez Municipal Airport. Flights will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 10 a.m., weather conditions permitting. ‘Amazing Desert Journey’ theme for Vacation Bible School



The Dolores United Methodist Church willhold Vacation Bible School from 9 to 11:30 a.m. daily, Monday through Friday, July 9 to 13. “Amazing Desert Journey” is the theme for this year which will be held at the Johnson Memorial UMC at 105 N. 8th St. in Dolores. Children ages 5-11 are invited to come and learn about Jesus through interesting Bible stories. Games, snacks and music will also be part of the special activities planned. Habitat for Humanity site dedication



Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County extends an invitation to county residents to join in the formal dedication of its first land purchase on Wednesday, July 11 at 9 a.m. The dedication will be short and conclude with the placement of a sign designating the lot as the site of a future Habitat for Humanity home. Acquisition of this property spanned three years of fundraising and hard work, and we hope folks will come join us in this celebration. To reach the dedication site, travel north on Hwy. 145, and turn right at T-Box Liquor on Fairway, just after the Elks Lodge. Turn again at the first intersection on your right. See you there!




Piñon Project hosts Toddler Olympics



Beginning Thursday, July 12, The Piñon Project’s Parents As Teachers program will host the Toddler Olympics, a fun 6-week series of games and activities designed to encourage a healthy family lifestyle. Each Thursday we will meet at the Parque de Vida amphitheater at 11:30 a.m., have a nutritious, delicious lunch together, and then play Olympic-themed games until 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided by The Piñon Project.This is a free activity, open to families of 2 and 3 year olds. Musicians, singers invited to take part in Gospel Music Fest



A Gospel Music Fest will be held on Saturday, July 14 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Montelores Baptist Church parking lot, 18735 Rd. 23.5, off Hwy. 184 across from Narraguinnep Reservoir. We are looking for music groups or individuals to share their talents with our local community. All styles of Gospel/Christian music are welcome! Hellbound Glory from Reno plays the Hollywood



On Saturday, July 14, the Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host Hellbound Glory from Reno, Nevada. Their flavor of scumbag country — featuring songs of love, heartbreak and destruction — are making them one of the bands in country to be reckoned with. Having played with the likes of David Allan Coe and Kid Rock, the band is going to bring a rockin’ time right here to Dolores! Show begins at 9 p.m.; tickets are $7.
