Cortez professional dirt bike racer Eli Tomac currently sits in third-place of the American Motorcyclist Association motocross standings.

Riding for Geico Powersports Honda Factory Racing Team, Tomac took fourth in the Red Bull Budds Creek (Md.) National 250cc race last Saturday.

The 19-year-old has tallied 200 points so far this season. Honda teammate Justin Barcia sits in second-place with 209 points, while Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett holds the 250 class lead with 222 points, respectively.

Tomac has had an outstanding outdoor MX season. After just five races, Tomac has claimed the checkered flag twice.

The race season started in Rancho Cordova, Calif., at the Hangtown Classic, where Tomac took fifth May 19. He rebounded nicely the next week in Wortham, Texas, at the Freestone Classic, claiming his first moto wins of the Lucas Oil Pro MX season.

Tomac came home to Colorado on June 2, to Thunder Valley MX track in Lakewood. But his fourth-place finish wasn’t as good as he expected.

Again, Tomac rebounded.

The youngster got back up on that dirt bike and won the FMF High Point National at Mt. Morris, Pa., in dramatic come-from-behind fashion June 9. Kenny Roczen (Red Bull KTM) led much of the race.

“That second moto was a lot of work,” Tomac told www.motorcycle-usa.com. “I never really gave in and kept fighting. Kenny (Roczen) had that mistake, so I ended up getting a chance for the win and I capitalized on it. I really think it was one of the best rides I’ve ever had because I had to come from so far behind. I think I was about sixth or seventh out of the gate.”

AMA MX racing will resume on Saturday, July 7, in Round 6 at the Red Bud National in Buchanan, Mich. The 250 class second moto will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 2 p.m.
