Nakai concert to benefit Mancos library
Tami Graham Presents An evening with R. Carlos Nakai, a benefit for the Mancos Public Library, Saturday, June 16, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the Mancos Opera House.
Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the worlds premier performer of the Native American flute. Since 1983, he has released over 35 albums. Nakai has earned two gold records and has received nine Grammy nominations.
The cost for the concert is $35 for general admission, $75 for VIP private reception with R. Carlos Nakai. Moetones play Stonefish for 2 year anniversary

Hymn For Her will play eclectic stomp-grass punk folk
Hymn For Her will bring their blazing live show to the Dolores River Brewery on Sunday, June 17 at 7 p.m. The Brewery is at 100 North 4th St. in Dolores.
Lucy Tight and Wayne Waxing are Hymn For Her, a rockin duo that hails from anywhere they can park their 16 foot, 1961 vintage Bambi Airstream (comes with dog and baby) as they tour the U.S. coast to coast. They describe their music as stomp-grass punk folk with a hint of Americana. Lucy plays a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box guitar, banjo and sometimes even a glockenspiel as she shares vocal duties with Wayne, who also plays acoustic guitar, banjo, dobro, and/or harmonica all while handling percussion on bass drum and hi-hat! Bullet microphones and an arsenal of effect pedals give this band a sound like no other. The show is enhanced by a slide show of original photos projected on an old-fashioned slide projector. Summer Enrichment Programs begin at Medicine Horse
Medicine Horse Equine Therapy Center will begin their Summer Enrichment Programs next week. Kids ages 7 through 12 will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. The beginning skills camp runs from Monday through Friday, June 18-22 and again July 16-20. The advanced skills camp runs from Aug. 6-10. Both camps are from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $120 and space is limited to six kids.
Also, an art, essay and poem contest for kids who love horses is open. Draw a picture, write a poem or an essay about why you want to come to a Medicine Horse Summer Camp this summer. If your art, poem or essay is chosen, you will earn a 1/2 scholarship for camp. Entries for the contest should be sent by Wednesday, June 27. The Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., invites kids to its 2012 Summer Reading Program Dream Big at Your Library. All students age 5-18 are invited to participate. These programs are run as a drop in but all children attending must enroll.
On Wednesday, June 20, join us for Awesome Aliens. Come explore what we know about life on other planets. Local artist Jaime Becktal will be on hand to help with a craft and will do some truly amazing face painting think Avatar! Imaginations required! Wholesome snacks will be provided during each program. Younger children may attend if accompanied by an adult throughout the program. Library hosts award-winning storyteller
The next performer in the Cortez Public Librarys Summer Reading Program Family Entertainment Series is Sara Ransom. Please come see her on Wednesday, June 20, at 2 p.m. Sara is a storyteller and has been featured in festivals from New England to New Zealand. She is the daughter and granddaughter of performing storytellers. Sara has traveled worldwide in learning her craft. Sara is a winner of a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Performance Fellowship in 1991. Her international experience exhibits itself in her eclectic performances. The library is located at 202 N. Rockslide plays original music

Lions Club will hold 70-year celebration barbecue event
The Cortez Lions Club is celebrating 70 years as a community service club! We invite the public to share in our celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 at the Parque de Vida Park amphitheater, 400 N. Mildred. Come enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and watermelon.
The Cortez Club became a chartered club on June 2,1942. Baptist Church to hold Vacation Bible School
Lifeway Baptist Church is having its Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29. Laurel Penwell will perform at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., on Wednesday, June 27, at 2 p.m. as part of the Summer Reading Program Family Entertainment Series. Laurels a librarian and storyteller based in Hesperus and uses humor, music, and puppets. Laurel has twelve years of library and school storytelling experience. Cortez Library offers educational Water Day
The Cortez Public Library will present Water Day 2012, an educational opportunity to learn more about our local water. The Dolores Water Conservancy District, Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company and the Cortez Water Plant will be joining us for the first ever Water Day in various area locations on Thursday, June 28. At 10 a.m., there will be a presentation by Mike Preston of the Dolores Water Conservancy District and Don Magnuson of Montezuma Valley Irrigation at the overlook at the end of the McPhee Campground. Driver Safety Course offered by AARP
AARP will sponsor a driver safety course on Thursday, June 28 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room in the Empire Electric Building, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
This four-hour course is authorized by the state of Colorado. It is designed to meet the needs of older drivers, and will review safe driving techniques as well as Colorado traffic laws. Completion of this course can qualify you for a discount on your automobile insurance. The course is available to all motorists whether or not they are members of AARP. A $12 fee for AARP members and a $14 fee for nonmembers is to be paid by check (no cash or credit cards), which covers materials. Please bring your drivers license and your AARP membership number (if you have one).
