Regarding the current discussion concerning DNA evidence in criminal justice and the DA of Montezuma County, Russell Wasley, I would like to submit the following viewpoint. I am a recently retired pathologist who was privileged to serve on a jury for a local case last month in which DNA evidence played a significant role in the trial proceedings. When DNA results are pristine, the interpretations are straightforward and relatively uncomplicated to understand for everyone involved. Such was not the case in this trial.
The DNA evidence at issue was contaminated by apparent multiple donors, thereby rendering final interpretations complex and ultimately inconclusive. With complex information such as this, it is imperative that the prosecution present the evidence in a clear and unbiased manner. In my opinion Mr. Wasley and his colleagues did so in a professional and exemplary manner.
