Free fly fishing clinic and derby
The local Dolores Rivers Anglers of Trout Unlimited and the Parks and Recreation Department of the city of Cortez, announce their third annual fly fishing clinic and fishing derby on Tuesday, June 12, at Parque de Vida. The free youth clinic starts at 9 a.m. and goes to 11:30. Youths aged from 10-16 are invited to learn the basics of proper gear, casting, knots and fly tying. The free adult classes, open for beginners to intermediates, will start at 1:30 p.m. and will go to 3:30. There is room for 40 youths and up to 12 adults per class. Please call the Cortez Recreation Center to preregister. The fishing derby, which is free and open to bait, lure and fly fishing, starts at 6 p.m. The Division of Wildlife will stock the Parque de Vida pond with trout. One must bring their own fishing gear for the derby. There will be a cleaning station available for use, as all fish caught must be kept. Race Across America volunteers
The Race Across America (California to Maryland) bike race is coming through Cortez from late June 15 until mid-day June 18. Mike Francisco is coordinating a Cortez time station/information booth in the northeast corner of the Walmart parking lot. Volunteers are needed to man the time station for any time period for those days. For those who want to volunteer and meet the cyclists, please call Francisco at 882-3870.
Second Annual Riverside Softball Tourneys
The second annual Riverside Youth Sports, 16-team, adult coed slow-pitch softball tournament, is schedule for June 15-17, at the Montezuma Creek (Utah) Softball Fields. Team entry fee is $175. A $75 non-refundable deposit is due Monday, June 4, to secure spot on brackets. Callbacks are on Tuesday, June 5, for team game time. Remaining balance must be paid before the first game. Awards go to the top six teams, including MVP and All-Tourney selections. Added attractions are the home run derby, team relay, triple play jackpot and center field home run jackpot barrel.

Spencer Posey memorial basketball tournament
The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc will host the Spencer Posey memorial basketball tournament June 15-17. The mens, double elimination tourney has a $300 entry fee that is due by Tuesday, June 5. Champions receive a cash prize, Pendleton Jackets and a trophy. Second place gets jackets and a trophy, while third place is awarded sweat shirts and a trophy. All players will receive a T-shirt. Certified officials will referee the tournament. Kiwanis Golf Tournament
The annual Kiwanis Club Fundraising Golf Tournament is on Saturday, June 16, at Conquistador Golf Course beginning at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds will go toward helping children and their families in the community. Entry fee is $40/person, which includes lunch and prizes. Golf cart and green fees are not included. Registration is at the club house. 4 Corners volleyball camp
The ninth annual 4 Corners volleyball camp, hosted by Mancos High School and coach Ramona Shepherd, will be held June 18-20. The clinicians will again be Adams State College coach Lindy Mortensen and her Grizzlies volleyball players. Numbers have grown so much (75 last year and campers were turned away), that there is no more room in Mancos. The camp is moving to Cortez. High school players will be at Montezuma-Cortez High School and middle school players will be at Cortez Middle School. The cost per camper will be $90 this year. M-CHS youth volleyball camp
The Montezuma-Cortez High School Lady Panthers will hold their annual fourth- through-sixth-grade coed youth volleyball camp. The camp is June 26-28, from 9 a.m. to noon at the M-CHS Main Gym. Camp fee is $60. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register on the first day. Camp clinicians are M-CHS coach Barbara Chappell and Cortez Middle School coach Valorie Bauer. Ute Mountain strongman competition
The second annual Ute Mountain Recreation Center, strongman competition, is set for Saturday, July 14, at the Ute Mountain Rec. Center parking lot in Towaoc. Its a $10 entry fee, one open division and five competitions. The top score wins it all, which is a trophy, cash prize and dinner. Call Rob or Nick at 564-5360 for more information.
Cortez Leopard Sharks swimming
Come swim with the Cortez Leopard Sharks swimming team. The swim season has just started and registration is ongoing throughout the spring and summer swim season. Practices are currently being held at the indoor pool of the Cortez Recreation Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. If interested in joining the team, want to improve swimming and make new friends, please feel free to come by and observe a practice and talk with the coaches.
