In response to the letter from Jessica Sutch in (Journal, June 23) I am compelled to contribute the following thoughts.
First, it is a shame that Sutch was apparently not present at all the county commission hearings. Regarding the future of Sage Hen. Her issues concerning cleanliness, law enforcement, and others have already been discussed to a lengthy degree. Imagine Parque de Vida without trash collection, grass mowing, parking lot cleaning, adjacent street maintenance, picnic area cleaning, restroom maintenance, and everything else involved. Imagine this going on for many years. What does Sutch think the park would look like then?
The problem is stewardship, not the reopening of the campgrounds. Public access areas everywhere need some agency to maintain them. Such an agency has not existed at Sage Hen for many years. This is a beautiful and nearby recreational treasure for all of us. (By the way, we have already paid for the campgrounds.) The answer to these problems is the title change for the Sage Hen area (entire McPhee?) so the county can take care of this wonderful outdoor asset. Sage Hen deserves a caretaker who actually cares about Sage Hen: Montezuma County.
The Forest Service has banned overnight camping at Sage Hen since the mid-90s, so how can one attribute the sad condition of Sage Hen to overnight camping? Let’s look elsewhere.
