Its time once again for the Cortez Public Librarys childrens Summer Reading Program. This year the theme is Dream Big, Read. Come by the library on Friday, June 1, and pick up a reading log. Kids can earn books, prizes and a cool T-shirt (while supplies last). This year were having a big drawing for six great prizes at the end of the program. Join our reading program and join the fun!
Were also sponsoring five great kids entertainers on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. The line-up follows:
June 13 Magical Dreams and Enchantments The Dream Faerie (aka Erica Sodos) is emerging from the depths of sleep to share her magic with you! She will enchant and inspire your imagination with her astonishing magic show, which is full of magical tales and abundant audience participation. Actress, magician and teacher, Erica Sodos has been performing stage shows of her own character creations for over 17 years.
June 20 Storyteller Sara Ransom has been featured in festivals from New England to New Zealand. She is the daughter and granddaughter of performing storytellers. Sara has traveled worldwide in learning her craft. Her excellent sense of pace and dramatic tension won her a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Performance Fellowship in 1991. Her international experience exhibits itself in her eclectic performances.
June 27 Dream On! ... REALLY! Hesperus storyteller, puppeteer and librarian Laurel Penwell presents traditional and modern stories and songs with her mandolin, puppets and a large dose of humor, appropriate for all ages. Laurel has 12 years of library and school storytelling experience.
July 4 Library closed
July 11 Michael Taylor, the Catch It Quick Juggler. Imagine a world filled with rubber chickens flipping through the air and balls bouncing and floating in complex patterns. Dream of juggling and becoming a gravity test unit. Visualize giggles and amazement. Its a fun-filled show of juggling, balance and inspiration. Michael has been performing for over 30 years.
July 18 Durango Barbershop Quartet is a select group from the Durango Barbershop Chorus. Theyre bringing harmony to our library and will sing many popular favorites and sleepy-time songs for you to dream on.
Through a statewide program called Colorado Water 2012, the Cortez Public Library in partnership with the Colorado Foundation for Water Education, The Colorado State Library, the Dolores Water Conservancy District and the Cortez Water Plant is offering three educational opportunities to learn about state and local water. First, from Wednesday, May 30, to Saturday, June 9, the library will host a display on Colorado Water that will be sent to us by the Foundation for Water Education. Second, at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, there will be a presentation by Mike Preston of the Dolores Water Conservancy District and Don Magnuson of Montezuma Valley Irrigation at the overlook at the end of the McPhee campground. Last, on the same day at 1 p.m., there will be a tour of the Cortez Water Plant, hosted by Bruce Smart. Maps and directions are available at the library.
Sometime in the first part of June, the library will be up and running on the Overdrive service. This will provide our patrons with downloadable ebooks, audio books, music and video.
And dont forget, if you like to listen to audio books, we have a new and improved downloadable service from Recorded Books called One Click Digital. You can access this now through our website. Go to www.cityofcortez.com, then government and then public library and look for the One Click Digital icon. There are more than 4,000 audio books available to you, and we have just begun to purchase best sellers for this service.
