A few of us have been trying to understand what happened at the Republican caucus this year when our incumbent D.A. lost to an unknown and inexperienced opponent. We could see no obvious reason for this, as Mr. Wasley had easily won his last election and has since done a very credible job as our DA, and we were not hearing any complaints about him. If one were simply hiring for the DA position, by placing the resumes of the two candidates side by side, Mr. Wasley would be the hands-down choice.

At first it was hard to understand what caused this undercurrent against Mr. Wasley, but at last the reason became clear. We see a very anti-federal-government official coupled with a group of anti-government folks leading the opposition against Mr. Wasley.

Now, I do not believe that it is the job of the DA to create political ideology one way or the other. The job of the DA is to prosecute crimes brought to him by law enforcement, and Mr. Wasley has been doing his job. Many of us have our share of anti-government sentiments but we should not let that cloud our judgement on other issues. Mr. Wasley most definitely does not deserve to be replaced just because of his refusal to leap astride a white horse and join the anti group on their lance charge against a government windmill.
