Zach Sullivan was not “shot down,” as your paper stated. He was shot while resisting arrest. Sullivan was in control of the situation that night over a year ago. He made the choice to be intoxicated and carrying a pistol. He made the choice to pull that pistol out of his pocket and point it at the law enforcement officers involved.

Our local law enforcement officers begin each shift with two goals in mind. The protection of the citizens of Cortez and Montezuma County, and to return home safely after their shift is done. They do not drive around looking for people to “shoot down.”

Thanks to the quick reactions of Cortez Police Officer Dallas Coker and Montezuma County Sheriff Deputy Patrick Spencer, along with the skill and hard work of District Attorney Russ Wasley, there is one less violent criminal on the streets of Cortez.

We owe those people our thanks. Without people such as them, the criminals would rule our community.
