Shannon Whiteman marks a vote as Rowena Smith pulls another ballot out of the voting box at the Ute Mountain Ute tribal election.

Ute Mountain Ute tribal members will elect one tribal council delegate during the Oct. 13 election in Towaoc.

Seven candidates are running for a seat being vacated by DeAnne House, whose three-year term is up.

The candidates are Mark Wing, DeAnne House, Lyndreth Wall, Marcianne Wing, Selwyn Whiteskunk, Davis Wing and Fernessa Dutchie-Richards.

Ute Mountain Ute tribal members who are 18 and over are automatically eligible to vote. An ID is required. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ute Mountain Community Center on Sunset Boulevard. After polls close, ballots will be counted by judges and election staff, and a winner will be announced. The ballot count is open to the public.

Tribal members from the reservation at White Mesa, Utah, vote only for chairman and their representative, so they don’t vote on Friday. “Election signs are going up around town, and there is information about the election on Channel 99,” said a Ute Mountain election official.
