People are discussing the weather, how dry it is and that we need rain-practically an “every year Spring occurrence” and probably the truth, especially in the agricultural area around Dove Creek and west Dolores County! I just do not know how our farm community can continue year after year with the drought threatening and the fields planted and needing that one good rain to get started. Well, to tell the truth, my family heritage is farming in Nebraska, dryland farming. The farmer is a special, optimistic kind of fellow or lady with nerves of steel and hope abounding.
The Griebel’s, Marilyn and Dr. Gerry, hiked up to Engel’s cabin last weekend which is a four or more mile trek. The roadway is passible only about half-way up the mountain because of the goodly amount of snow yet to melt. The hike takes about 2 hours and evidently the Griebels are in good shape! Speaking of the hike up to Engels’s cabin, the Gass brothers and their back-country skiing buddy’s climb up the same mountain during the winter months and you will see ski tracks on the hour glass on Mt. Expectation several times during the ski season.
At this very moment, as I gaze out of our window facing west, a solid wall of snow is creeping over Bemis and headed for Rico. The weather has been trying to do this very deed the last couple of days. There is no breeze and it is very quiet outside.
The “Dew South” restaurant is under new management and is sporting a new name “Herk’s.” I believe that it was a favorite nickname of somebody’s grandpa, but I could be wrong. Anyway, we are delighted and glad to have this fine restaurant in Town. New hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week with Sunday Brunch 9 a.m. 2 p.m. and a main menu until closing at 9 p.m. Beginning May 24, breakfast will be served Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
Out-going Mayor Barbara Betts is retiring. She has done an excellent job during her tenure and she actually enjoyed doing her duties and worked with the School of Mines and others on the geo-thermal projects and other heavy stuff like our continual water and sewer projects and etc. David Kunz who has been on the Town Board as long as I can remember and has constributed so much during his tenure is now the Acting Mayor. Our Board members are Genevieve Yellowman, Gary Reid and Gregg Anderson. At this time, there are three vacant seats that need to be filled.
Marlene Hazen has lived in Rico for two decades. An active member of the community, she participates in organizations such as the Rico Women’s Club and Rico Historical Society.
