Are red flags flying over your nonprofit organization?
United Way of Southwest Colorado, Southwest Community Leadership Collaborative and Charol Rhan consulting are teaming up to provide a seminar that will help local agencies identify those flags and resolve the issues they represent.
The event will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at First National Bank, 2258 E. Main St. in Cortez. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
The cost is $20 for United Way agencies and $35 for other nonprofit organizations. Payment is required in advance, and checks may be made payable to United Way of Southwest Colorado.

Rhan has more than 15 years of nonprofit and public agency management experience and has led agencies through challenges that include inefficient and disengaged boards and boards that have tried to run day-to-day operates, to significant staff turnover with lack of training, to donor loss of confidence and funding.
This seminar will look at the cases of three nonprofits with which Ms. Rhan is familiar. While ignoring obvious and not-so-obvious warning signs, they continued to provide valuable services to their communities. The methods they chose to address their problems led to different outcomes.
One of the agencies being discussed is Montezuma County Partners, Inc., a 20-year-old nonprofit that provided diversion and probation programs for youth as well as mentoring and direct services to homeless and runway youth. The others are a homeless shelter for women and children in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a 122-year-old Chicago agency that served families in a multi-disciplinary support system.
Participants will explore the various causes for the agencies failures and successes, and identify wimilarities with their own agencies. Participants also will receive a useful checklist that can be used with their staffs, boards and volunteers.
