Ute Mtn. rodeo season heats up

The local Ute Mountain high school and junior high rodeo teams have galloped into the midst of their season.

In Golden on April 7-8, the junior high division had strong results. Barrel racing saw Cayce Lockhart take seventh at 19.528 the first day. She was 13th the following day at 25.597, and took fourth in ribbon roping with Jace Norell with a 13. Team roping had Cade Van Soelen and Cheylin Corman place second in 14.50.

In high school action the first day, Saddle bronc rider Tanner Lockhart took second, scoring 60. Barrel racing had Kacey Schurr, sixth, 17.877; and, Shanya Neighbors, 29th, 20.778. Schurr was seventh in goat tying at 9.970. Neighbors came in 17th in pole bending at 26.005.

Day two results in team roping were Riley Van Soelen and Jordan Williams, seventh, 14.750. In barrel racing, Schurr, sixth, 17.713; and, Neighbors, 36th, 25.410. Neighbors also took 22nd in pole bending with a 29.140.

In Pueblo on April 21-22, Tanner Lockhart, and ropers Cade Van Soelen and Corman saddled first-place wins.

Cade Van Soelen and Corman won the team roping event with a second day score of 9.70 in junior high action. Cade Van Soelen and Corman took fourth the first day at 15.380. Day one statistics in barrel racing showed Cayce Lockhart come in second in 16.488. Ribbon ropers Norell and Cayce Lockhart were fifth, 13.330.

Tanner Lockhart scored a first-place tie of 70 in high school saddle bronc the second day.

Day one barrel racing, Schurr, second, 15.753; Emma Reim, 23rd, 18.025; and, Neighbors, 24th, 18.197. Goat tying, Schurr, 10th, 11.510; and, in pole bending, Neighbors, 21st, 34.539.

Barrel racing the next day had Schurr, 15th, 16.642; Reim, 24th, 17.657; and, Neighbors, 25th, 18.081. Schurr placed eighth at 11.210 in goat tying. In pole bending, it was Reim, 14th, 28.853; and, Neighbors, 18th, 34.905.

Other team members traveling to Golden and Pueblo were Dax Koskie, Trevor Holaday, Keenan Elliott, Kyle Likes, Wiley Kirks, Justin White and Jake Cruzan.

The Ute Mountain rodeo teams still face spring competition in Henderson, Eagle, Pagosa Springs, Lamar and Monte Vista.
