The Cortez Animal Shelter will host a book signing on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter along with a homeless pet Adopt-a-Thon. Local author Mary Darlene Chandler, a retired teacher, has written a book about her pet Mutt Tzu, Tippee, and her adventures. There will be a reading as well as a book signing starting at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Chandler taught the last seven years of her 42-year career at Manaugh Elementary. When Mrs. Chandler was teaching, she took her students to tour the Cortez Animal Shelter and a few of the shelter staff came to her classroom to talk about the proper care of animals. One year, the fifth-grade class made a quilt, sold it and donated the money raised to the shelter. Darlene says “Both my husband, Larry, and I have a soft heart for animals. We want to see them cared for properly. We appreciate the Cortez Animal Shelter. They have a hard and usually thankless job.” Part of the proceeds from sales of the book “Tippee’s Big Adventure” will be donated to the shelter to help take care of the animals. For more information about the Adopt-a-Thon or the book reading, call the Cortez Animal Shelter at 565-4910.
