Manaugh program seeks donated items for Trash & Treasures Sale



Manaugh Elementary School will hold their 1st Annual Trash & Treasure Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the New Wings Day Treatment Center (north of Manaugh) at 210 S. Washington St., Cortez.

All proceeds from the sale will go towards buying educational materials for the New Wings program and the Manaugh Elementary library.

Montelores Catholic Community holds Spring Rummage Sale



The Montelores Catholic Community will hold a Spring Rummage & Yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at St. Margaret Mary Church at Montezuma and Market St.

A wide variety of merchandise will be offered, including canning jars and canners, yard and garden tools and supplies, riding mower attachments, furniture to include dressers, table and chairs, a patio set, bookcases and also a very large offering of women’s plus size clothing (18 to 4x), and tools and shop items, along with the usual books, clothing, linens, holiday and household goods.

Area 9Health Fairs offers free or low-cost health screenings



The Cortez 9Health Fair will be on Saturday, April 21 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Cortez Recreation Center. The Dove Creek 9Health Fair will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Dove Creek High School.

Take advantage of opportunities on these dates to access health services you may have missed during the year, and learn about important health topics from many local providers. Free screenings will include: Blood pressure checks, Heart health screening, Breast exams, Vision and hearing screening, Body mass index measurement, Balance assessment, Sleep apnea assessment, Spinal alignment evaluation, Nutrition screening, and much more. Low-cost blood draw screenings include: Blood chemistry screening $30, Prostate specific antigen (PSA) $25, Blood count screening $15, Vitamin D screening $40, Hemoglobin A1C (blood sugar) $25, Take-home colon cancer screening kit $20. Do not eat anything or drink beverages that contain sugar or cream for 12 hours prior to blood draw. Diabetics should not fast. Drinking plenty of water and staying warm will make your blood draw easier.

Masonic Lodge Vial of Life Project will be offered during 9Health Fair



The Cortez Masonic Lodge #133 A.F.& A.M. in partnership with the Montezuma County Emergency Services Association will host a Vial of Life Project during the county 9Health Fair in Cortez on Saturday, April 21.

The Vial of Life is a nationally recognized program, designed to speak for you when you can’t speak for yourself. The vial contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment. Montezuma County EMS staff will be present to answer your medically-related questions.

Fire Protection District will host open house, food drive



The Cortez Fire Protection District will host an open house and food drive on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station 1, 30 N. Ash Street.

Activities will include fire engine rides on an antique Seagrave fire engine, fire extinguisher training and an auto extrication demonstration at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stop by and meet your local firemen and women and learn more about how the fire department serves you. Bring non-perishable food items to donate for the Good Samaritan Center.

Spring Tea Party will benefit Cancer Society’s Relay for Life



This year the American Cancer Society Relay for Life theme is The Magic of Relay. As one of the many team fundraising events that are scheduled to be held, the Hocus Pocus Magic Team cordially invites you and yours to attend their Saturday, April 21 Spring Tea Party to be held at the elegant Seas’ning Tea Room at 319 W. Montezuma Ave. There will be a 1 p.m. seating, and a second one at 3:30 p.m.

Rustlers 4H Club to have annual yard sale fundraiser in Mancos



Rustlers 4H Club will be having their 2nd Annual Yard Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, April 21 at 8 a.m., at 300 N. Willow in Mancos, across the street from the Mancos Laundromat.

This year’s yard sale will be indoors, so rain or shine, we will have treasures set up for everyone to peruse. Rustlers club uses their funds to help with some community services, club activities, t-shirts, etc. We hope to see you there!

Get Yourself Talking, Get Yourself Tested Campaign comes to Cortez



This April, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains is again participating in the GYT: Get Yourself Talking, Get Yourself Tested Campaign as a part of STD Awareness Month. The Cortez health center at 20 W. North St. will offer $10 STD testing and $10 HIV screening on Monday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Thursday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One in two sexually active young people will get an STD by the time they turn 25 and most won’t know it, which is why it is so important to get yourself tested. Appointments are recommended, but not required.

Cortez will host two area mobile blood drives



United Blood Services will have their Bloodmobile available for those who wish to donate blood from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 23, at Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 N. Mildred Rd., and from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at Kemper Elementary School, 620 E. Montezuma.

Dolores Rotary Club Bingo Night



The Dolores Rotary Club will be sponsoring a bingo night on Tuesday, April 24 at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. Chili, cornbread and dessert will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. for $5 with bingo following at 7 p.m. Cards are $1 per game or $10 for the evening. All proceeds will benefit Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Dolores High School.

Chamber will hold 1st Annual Professional Assistants’ Day Event



The First Annual Professional Assistants’ Day Event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at First National Bank in Cortez.

In honor of National Administrative Professionals’ Day, the Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce and AboutFace Aesthetics has prepared an event to help celebrate your administrative professional. The day planned for your assistant will let them know just how much you appreciate all that they do for you throughout the year. Guests will enjoy two full hours of pampering, lunch and fellowship with other professionals. The celebration will feature a gourmet lunch catered by Seas’nings and special demonstrations by Georgia Stanley of AboutFace Aesthetics. ‘Education Under Fire’ screening, discussion at library



The public is invited to view and discuss the “Education Under Fire” DVD April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.

This is a local opportunity to join Amnesty International, Nobel Peace Prize recipients President Jose Ramos-Horta and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and others in sharing concerns about human rights, specifically the right to universal education. Joshus Rubenstein, Northeast Regional Director for Amnesty International USA, writes, “Education Under Fire illuminates a little-known struggle for human dignity by the Baha’i community in Iran to overcome systematic discrimination and secure higher education for its young people. Amnesty International is proud to be associated with this project and encourages its members and supporters to pay attention and get involved!”

SWMH presents ‘So What If I Snore?’



April Randle, MD, Medical Director of the Diagnostic Sleep Center at Southwest Memorial Hospital will present “So What If I Snore?” on Wednesday, April 25 from 12:15 to 1 p.m. upstairs at the Colorado Welcome Center in Cortez, at the corner of Main and Mildred.

Participants at this free event will learn about the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea and find out how the condition impairs health and well-being. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required.

Author Hopkins will have encore sci-fi mystery book reading



Author John Christian Hopkins will return for an encore book reading of his latest novel, “Twilight of the Gods” at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 at the Spruce Tree Coffeehouse, 318 E. Main St., Cortez.

“Twilight of the Gods,” released late last year, is a sci-fi/mystery hybrid involving a mysterious murder and the Mayan Long Count Calendar that may predict the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012. Hopkins’ book was featured on the national Native America Calling radio program in December 2011, when he was selected as that month’s “Native in the Spotlight.” Hopkins is a member of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Indian Tribe; he is an award-winning journalist and former nationally syndicated columnist.

Beech St. Preschool will have giant yard sale to raise funds



Beech Street Preschool is having a big yard sale from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 26, 27 and 28 at the preschool’s Big Room, 510 N. Beech St.

This fundraiser is to raise money to purchase school supplies for the upcoming year. We are accepting any clean, gently used items as donations. Items we cannot accept include large appliances, electronics, and undergarments.

Donations needed for For Pets’ Sake’s huge spring yard sale



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society will have a huge spring yard sale Friday through Sunday, April 27 through 29 at the Cortez Christian Church Family Life Center on the corner of Empire and Hwy. 145. The sale times will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

So, have fun with your spring cleaning and donate those unwanted treasures to the humane society! Donations can be brought to the building on Thursday, April 26 from 2 to 7 p.m., or call For Pets’ Sake at 565-7387 for other options, or for pick-up of large items. We need a lot of goodies to make money to help the dogs and cats in Montezuma and Dolores Counties. Look hard for donations, and then come and get new treasures at the sale! Spring is theme of April Storytime at the Cortez Public Library



“Too Early for Spring?” is the April theme of the newly-renamed Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Both days will follow the same theme. On Thursday there will be no craft. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays.

“Jump Frog” will wrap up the month on Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27.

Free Severe Storm Spotter Training for Southwest Colorado



The National Weather Service invites the public to attend Severe Storm Spotter Training from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office — Training Room, 730 E. Driscoll St. (use main entrance) in Cortez.

If you are interested in severe weather, then please show up for this training. Learn how to identify and report significant and severe weather to the National Weather Service, and learn how to accurately measure precipitation. This training is free to the public. No RSVP is required; just show up for the training if you’d like to attend.

The Cortez Farmers Market applications for returning and new vendors have until Friday, April 27 to submit their application with payment to reserve their space(s). After April 27, the Cortez Farmers Market Committee will meet to consider new vendor applications and assign space(s). The Market will open on Saturday, June 2 and end October 27.

Annual Pueblo-to-Pueblo run, bike ride will benefit Cultural Center

For Pets’ Sake holds Low-Cost Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society will host their spring Low-Cost Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 28 at the IFA Country Store, 10501 Highway 491 in Cortez.

Veterinarian Dr. Sue Grabbe with Four Corners MASH will offer dog and cat packages which include rabies, distemper, parvo (dogs), leukemia (cats), and more for $39 each, or $14 for rabies only. Packages without rabies are just $32. Exact change is appreciated; checks are okay, but no credit cards please. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. A portion of each package will be donated to For Pets’ Sake.

Children’s Kiva holds open house, summer program registration



Join The Children’s Kiva Montessori School for our Spring Open House, Thursday, May 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 1204 E. Empire St. in Cortez.

“Celebrate, Even the Little Things” is the May theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Variety of computer training classes offered at the Cortez Library



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in May. All classes start at 1 p.m.

On Friday, May 4 and 18, Gabe Torres from the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center will teach computer classes on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including registering with the Workforce Center; updating your Workforce registration; conducting job searches statewide; applying for unemployment insurance; resume preparation; and searching for State applications.

On Thursday, May 10, Randy Funk will hold a class called Incredibly Basic Computer Skills including: turning the computer on and off; using the mouse or mouse pad; opening, closing and moving a window; finding a website using the address bar and finding a website using Google.

On Thursday, May 24, Randy Funk will teach Basic II Computer Skills including: documents; folders; drives; saving and printing documents.

All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library at 565-8117 or by stopping by.




Cortez Lions present annual magic show to raise funds for eyeglasses



For the eighth year, the Lions Club of Cortez will proudly sponsor the Mysto the Magi Magic Show at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 at the Montezuma-Cortez High School auditorium, 206 W. Seventh St.

All seats are $5. Tickets are available at the door. A dazzling family magic show filled with fun and surprises, this show features the celebrated magician Mysto the Magi. All proceeds from this fundraising event go to provide eye exams, eye care and glasses for children and other individuals in Cortez and the surrounding area who need these services and are not covered by other programs or who have limited income. The Cortez Lions Club is proud to continue this important fundraising tradition of Benefit Magic Shows in order to serve and support the community.

Walking Together event promotes health

The Journey to Wellness Walking Together for Healthier Nations event will take place May 4 at several starting points, with the walk ending at the Four Corners Monument. Registration is at 6 a.m., with the walk starting at 7 a.m.

All participants that walk three miles will receive a free T-shirt.

Community indoor flea market will have vendors, student art



A community indoor flea market will be held on Friday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Barnabas Church Hall, 110 W. North St., at the corner of Elm and North St.

A variety of vendors have rented spaces, including non-profit organizations and small businesses. Among them will be students from Southwest Open School’s art department displaying and selling their art work.

Habitat for Humanity seeks donated items for fundraiser yard sale



Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County is holding a yard sale in the Big R parking lot on Main St. in Cortez on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain dates are May 6 and May 12.

This fundraiser will feature building materials as well as household furnishings, appliances and sporting goods. We have a wide array of new and used items donated by individuals and local businesses.

Community Garden to hold groundbreaking, soil workshop



Cortez Community Garden announces their first annual groundbreaking event and workshop. On Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. the garden will celebrate the groundbreaking of our new site with our first Soil Building workshop taught by Greg Valamvaming.

Greg is the former CSU Extension director for La Plata county. He will be teaching the different soil structures and how to build up your soil for better overall growth and higher yields at harvest. Join us for this fun and informative workshop. The garden and workshop are located at 515 N. Park St. just north of the Methodist Church. There is a requested donation of $3 per workshop participant.

Disc Golf Picnic benefits American Red Cross



The 4 Corners Red Cross Disc Golf is hosting the “World’s Biggest Disc Golf Picnic” that will benefit the Southwest Colorado chapter of the American Red Cross on Sunday, May 6 at the Centennial Park Disc Golf Course in Cortez. The public is invited to spectate, or stop by and learn about becoming a local Red Cross volunteer at the big gazebo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Disc golfers can participate in Random Draw Doubles teeing off at 10 a.m., fee is $20 with lunch included.

Local professional disc golfers will offer lessons all morning for $5, lunch and a golf disc included.
