Manaugh program seeks donated items for Trash & Treasures Sale
Manaugh Elementary School will hold their 1st Annual Trash & Treasure Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the New Wings Day Treatment Center (north of Manaugh) at 210 S. Washington St., Cortez.
All proceeds from the sale will go towards buying educational materials for the New Wings program and the Manaugh Elementary library.

Montelores Catholic Community holds Spring Rummage Sale
The Montelores Catholic Community will hold a Spring Rummage & Yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at St. Margaret Mary Church at Montezuma and Market St.
A wide variety of merchandise will be offered, including canning jars and canners, yard and garden tools and supplies, riding mower attachments, furniture to include dressers, table and chairs, a patio set, bookcases and also a very large offering of womens plus size clothing (18 to 4x), and tools and shop items, along with the usual books, clothing, linens, holiday and household goods.

Area 9Health Fairs offers free or low-cost health screenings
The Cortez 9Health Fair will be on Saturday, April 21 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Cortez Recreation Center. The Dove Creek 9Health Fair will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Dove Creek High School.
Take advantage of opportunities on these dates to access health services you may have missed during the year, and learn about important health topics from many local providers. Free screenings will include: Blood pressure checks, Heart health screening, Breast exams, Vision and hearing screening, Body mass index measurement, Balance assessment, Sleep apnea assessment, Spinal alignment evaluation, Nutrition screening, and much more. Masonic Lodge Vial of Life Project will be offered during 9Health Fair
The Cortez Masonic Lodge #133 A.F.& A.M. in partnership with the Montezuma County Emergency Services Association will host a Vial of Life Project during the county 9Health Fair in Cortez on Saturday, April 21.
The Vial of Life is a nationally recognized program, designed to speak for you when you cant speak for yourself. The vial contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment. Fire Protection District will host open house, food drive
The Cortez Fire Protection District will host an open house and food drive on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station 1, 30 N. Ash Street.
Activities will include fire engine rides on an antique Seagrave fire engine, fire extinguisher training and an auto extrication demonstration at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stop by and meet your local firemen and women and learn more about how the fire department serves you. Get Yourself Talking, Get Yourself Tested Campaign comes to Cortez
This April, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains is again participating in the GYT: Get Yourself Talking, Get Yourself Tested Campaign as a part of STD Awareness Month. The Cortez health center at 20 W. North St. will offer $10 STD testing and $10 HIV screening on Monday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Thursday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One in two sexually active young people will get an STD by the time they turn 25 and most wont know it, which is why it is so important to get yourself tested. Appointments are recommended, but not required.

Author Hopkins will have encore sci-fi mystery book reading
Author John Christian Hopkins will return for an encore book reading of his latest novel, Twilight of the Gods at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 at the Spruce Tree Coffeehouse, 318 E. Main St., Cortez.
Twilight of the Gods, released late last year, is a sci-fi/mystery hybrid involving a mysterious murder and the Mayan Long Count Calendar that may predict the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012. Hopkins book was featured on the national Native America Calling radio program in December 2011, when he was selected as that months Native in the Spotlight. Hopkins is a member of Rhode Islands Narragansett Indian Tribe; he is an award-winning journalist and former nationally syndicated columnist.

Free Severe Storm Spotter Training for Southwest Colorado
The National Weather Service invites the public to attend Severe Storm Spotter Training from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at the Montezuma County Sheriffs Office Training Room, 730 E. Driscoll St. (use main entrance) in Cortez.
If you are interested in severe weather, then please show up for this training. Learn how to identify and report significant and severe weather to the National Weather Service, and learn how to accurately measure precipitation. This training is free to the public. No RSVP is required; just show up for the training if youd like to attend.

Veterinarian Dr. Sue Grabbe with Four Corners MASH will offer dog and cat packages which include rabies, distemper, parvo (dogs), leukemia (cats), and more for $39 each, or $14 for rabies only. Packages without rabies are just $32. Exact change is appreciated; checks are okay, but no credit cards please. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. Variety of computer training classes offered at the Cortez Library
The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in May. All classes start at 1 p.m.
On Friday, May 4 and 18, Gabe Torres from the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center will teach computer classes on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including registering with the Workforce Center; updating your Workforce registration; conducting job searches statewide; applying for unemployment insurance; resume preparation; and searching for State applications.
On Thursday, May 10, Randy Funk will hold a class called Incredibly Basic Computer Skills including: turning the computer on and off; using the mouse or mouse pad; opening, closing and moving a window; finding a website using the address bar and finding a website using Google.
On Thursday, May 24, Randy Funk will teach Basic II Computer Skills including: documents; folders; drives; saving and printing documents.

Cortez Lions present annual magic show to raise funds for eyeglasses
For the eighth year, the Lions Club of Cortez will proudly sponsor the Mysto the Magi Magic Show at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 at the Montezuma-Cortez High School auditorium, 206 W. Seventh St.
All seats are $5. Tickets are available at the door. A dazzling family magic show filled with fun and surprises, this show features the celebrated magician Mysto the Magi. All proceeds from this fundraising event go to provide eye exams, eye care and glasses for children and other individuals in Cortez and the surrounding area who need these services and are not covered by other programs or who have limited income. The Journey to Wellness Walking Together for Healthier Nations event will take place May 4 at several starting points, with the walk ending at the Four Corners Monument. Registration is at 6 a.m., with the walk starting at 7 a.m.

Cortez Community Garden announces their first annual groundbreaking event and workshop. On Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. the garden will celebrate the groundbreaking of our new site with our first Soil Building workshop taught by Greg Valamvaming.
Greg is the former CSU Extension director for La Plata county. He will be teaching the different soil structures and how to build up your soil for better overall growth and higher yields at harvest. Disc Golf Picnic benefits American Red Cross
The 4 Corners Red Cross Disc Golf is hosting the Worlds Biggest Disc Golf Picnic that will benefit the Southwest Colorado chapter of the American Red Cross on Sunday, May 6 at the Centennial Park Disc Golf Course in Cortez. The public is invited to spectate, or stop by and learn about becoming a local Red Cross volunteer at the big gazebo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Disc golfers can participate in Random Draw Doubles teeing off at 10 a.m., fee is $20 with lunch included.
