Running a campaign for county commissioner has been an interesting and educational experience. I want to thank the many people who encouraged me and stood behind me during my campaign. My running for office was not about any personal or partisan political agenda but about being involved and wanting to make a difference in our county.
Yes, Im disappointed that my run was cut short, but what bothers me most is the general publics political apathy. I was not surprised that many people dont understand the caucus/assembly process, because unfortunately, civics is barely taught in school any more. What surprised me is the number of people who dont get how important their voter status is. Too many people signed my petition with good intent but bad information. Incorrect residence address and wrong party affiliation were the main reasons that 20 percent of the signatures I collected were disqualified.
Im out of the race now, and I think thats unfortunate, but a bigger tragedy would be someone being denied a vote because their status or information is wrong. I would encourage everyone to take two minutes to go to the Colorado Secretary of State website and check your voter information, or call the county clerks office and verify that what they have on record is correct. I think the 2012 elections are going to be the most significant of our time. If youre not registered yet, go and register; if you are check your status.
As for me I will not be your next county commissioner but I will continue to be involved in our community.
