Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestlers who are headed to the 2017 Colorado championships will get an escort out of town at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday.

The escort begins at the high school, at South Sligo and Seventh streets, follows Seventh to South Broadway, then drives through downtown Cortez on Main Street to U.S. Highway 160.

Wrestlers Matthew Broughton, Stevie Fuentes, Shawn Higgins and Josh Ramos compete in the 3A class of the state championships Thursday through Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Coaches Shad Bellmire, Ryan Daves and Evan Frost will accompany them.

Montezuma-Cortez’s state swim team received a police escort last week, but with a shorter route that bypassed most of Main Street’s business district.

“Our hopes are that we can involve more businesses in stepping out and waving at them, wishing them luck and support,” said Deb Ramsey, of M-CHS.

Mancos High School is sending Richard Martinez and Cameron Fury to the state tournament. Dolores is sending Zander Eichner and Brandon Ward. Mancos and Dolores are both in the class 2A tournament. Weigh-in for classes 2A and 3A is Friday morning.
