Fresh off a playoff appearance last season, the Mancos High School football team enters this year with high hopes thanks to several returning starters and some talented underclassmen.

Leading the way on the field for this year’s Bluejays team on the field will be sophomore quarterback Breccen Morelli, who spent time under center last season and made a positive impression. Other key players on this year’s team include junior wide receiver Chance Garcia and senior tight-end Nicolas Huver, who together will look to inject excitement into their team’s passing game while leading younger players.

“Our upperclassmen try to play an exciting style and keep kids humble,” Huver said. “I’ve never liked kids talking trash to me and I don’t like our team talking trash on the field.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bluejays will be led by senior linebacker Kaleb Hargraves, who made a name for himself last season as a hard hitter and emotional leader of the team.

“We’re a team that thumps,” Hargraves said. “We’re a hard-hitting team, and we like to impose our will against the opposing team’s offense.”

The Bluejays, who finished 5-5 last year and lost to Hoehne in the first round of the playoffs, will open this season on the road against Plateau Valley.

The Bluejays will then return home on Aug. 31 to face off against Shiprock Northwest.

Asked about goals for this year’s team, most players were diplomatic, saying that they would like to work hard and remain competitive. Hargraves was a bit more blatant however, hinting that his team might be in play to win a state championship.

“We want to go to state and take it all the way back,” said Hargraves, smiling. “We’re a talented team and I think we’re going to have a great season.”
