Capping off an impressive summer in style, Cortez native Thayer Plewe won top honors in the Utah PGA junior program’s season-ending major championship at Hidden Valley Country Club on Aug. 14.

For the 12-year-old Cortez native, the first-place finish in Sandy, Utah came as a result of a 2-under-par round of 70, which was good enough to capture the prestigious event by four strokes.

Plewe’s sister, former Montezuma-Cortez High School standout Kiselya Plewe, caddied for the junior throughout the event and after his decisive victory, Plewe received the Utah PGA Junior Program’s Player of the Year award in the division for 13- to 14-year-olds.

This summer, Plewe competed in 12 junior tournaments, including nine in Utah. Top performances included a first-place finish at the Junior at the Ridge Tournament on June 28, a tie for sixth place at the Showdown Classic PGA Junior Major on June 19 and a fifth-place finish at the Valley View PGA Junior Tournament on Valley View Golf Course.

With the summer tournament season now complete, Plewe will continue practicing at Conquistador Golf Course in preparation for junior tournaments throughout the calendar year.
