Track teams compete in Farmington, New Mexico

Mancos, Dolores and Dove Creek marked the start of the track and field season Saturday in Farmington, N.M.

All three schools competed in the Piedra Vista High School Invitational.

Cassie Lard had a strong season debut for the Dolores Lady Bears. The junior was eighth in the 100-meter dash (14.54), ninth in the 200 (29.92) and sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 30-02.50. Mindy McCracken placed fifth in the event at 30-06.50. Rachel Beverlin raced to a sixth-place time of 1:07.44 in the 400. Brianna Schwartz had ninth-place times in the 100- and-300-meter hurdles at 18.90 and 56.12. As a squad, the Lady Bears were 11th out of 17 teams with seven points. Aztec (N.M.) won the girls team title.

The Dove Creek Lady Bulldogs were 13th with six points. Cori Guynes led the way with in the hurdles with fourth- and-fifth-place finishes in 18.19 (100) and 53.15 (300). Shelbie Knuckles was sixth and eighth in the 100 hurdles and triple jump, finishing at 18.51 and 29-04. Madison Young threw the discus 83-11, which was good for eighth-place.

The thin Mancos Lady Bluejays team finished 16th. Senior captain Devin Kroeker paced Mancos in the high jump with a fourth-place height of 4-06. She came in 11th in the 100, sprinting at 14.77.

The Mancos boys placed 13th as a team. Host Piedra Vista took home the boys team championship.

Branson Mitchell recorded fourth- and-ninth-place times for the Bluejays in the 400 (53.61) and 200 (25.34). Brandon McKie snuck in the top-10 running the 800 in a time of 2:18.97 to take ninth. Anthony Reiners leaped to 10 and 11th in the triple jump (34-10.25) and 300-hurdles (48.43).

Stephen O’Connor-Seville had a good day for the Dolores Bears, who finished 12th as a team ahead of rival Mancos. The senior recorded quick times in the 800 (2:16.14) and 200 (25.38) to come in sixth and 10th.

Dove Creek’s Cole Baughman hurdled to 11th and 14th in the 110-meter and 300 at 19.85 and 49.09.

Dolores and Dove Creek will compete Saturday at the Delta High School meet at 9 a.m.

Mancos will be back in the Land of Enchantment on Friday and Saturday at the B & B meet in Aztec.
