The Montezuma-Cortez High School girls swimming team finished its regular season.

As the Lady Panthers have done all year, they hit the road. M-CHS swam in Delta and Aspen on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Panthers placed third as a team in Delta ahead of the host Lady Panthers and Grand Junction. Durango won the meet and Gunnison took second.

“We had some really goods swim times and the girls are dropping at the right time,” M-CHS coach Ann Hight said.

Emily Harris came in second in the 200-Individual Medley Relay at 2:41.08. It was a personal record for the Dolores junior.

Elana Cope and Meggie Curtis finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:33.58 and 2:33.87. Each dropped three seconds in the event. Cope also placed second in the 500-free in 6:50.06, which was good for an eight second improvement.

Overall, coach High feels it was a pretty good week of competition.

“We’re so much smaller than teams like Durango. We focus more on the smaller teams like Gunnison, Delta and Aspen,” she said. “With smaller teams, we can compete well with them.”

Now the girls are gearing up for the Southwestern League duals at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction on Friday and Saturday. A chance at state is at stake.

“The girls were still a little tired. They’re going to rest a lot,” said High about preparation for leagues. “We’re mainly warming up and then we’ll do some all-out sprints. At this point, I can’t get them any faster. They need to be rested to hit their (start) dive and hit their turns for faster times.”

In order to see the best results in Grand Junction, Hight has brought in coaches Kevin Ketterer and Steve Heath to help in practice this week.

“I want to thank Steve Heath and Kevin Ketterer for helping,” Hight said. “More girls can get individual attention. They get evaluated by three different pairs of eyes.”

The starting gun sounds on Friday and Saturday at 4 and 2 p.m.
