Save the opportunity for meaningful elections

Dear Editor:

I decided to attend the Move to Amend rally in Mancos this Saturday and was inspired by what some of our neighbors are trying to achieve. The enormous task of amending the Constitution in order to prohibit corporations from spending unlimited sums to influence elections seems overwhelming, but as Barbara Lynch, a speaker at the rally, pointed out, this has been accomplished 27 times in the past, and it can be done again. It’s also the last available option to override the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which enabled the creation of so-called “super PACs.” These organizations, which have non-profit status, are not limited in the amount of money they can spend in influencing elections.

I saw maybe 50 people at the rally, but couldn’t spot any degenerates or dangerous radicals, at least anyone more radical than our founding fathers. I propose we join these people in demanding that candidates for office renounce Citizens United and support a new constitutional amendment. It could be our last chance to save the opportunity for meaningful elections in America.
