It was one of those nights for Katlynn McGee Friday at Dolores High School.

The Lady Bear hit seven 3-pointers and nearly set the school record for most points in a game with 33.

Although McGee fell one point shy of tying the DHS record, her team earned a convincing conference win over Nucla, 73-41.

“I was just trying to do my dad proud and break the record. I really wanted to play tonight,” McGee said regarding her father, the late Karl McGee.

Dolores (4-4, 2-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) did what it wanted when it wanted against the Nucla Lady Mustangs (1-5, 1-4 2A/1A SJBL). Whether it was senior captain Katlynn McGee lighting it up from downtown, or the hungry Lady Bears forcing turnovers and diving for loose balls, Nucla simply had no answer.

Dolores cruised to a 39-16 halftime lead behind its three major players Katlynn McGee, Lexi Atkinson and Cydney McHenry. The trio received plenty of rest in the second half with Dolores in control. John McHenry was able to get some valuable play from his bench.

“Our bench isn’t as deep as it was last year, so getting these younger girls in there and getting them used to the faster pace of the game, it helps them out,” he said. “We’ll definitely need them down the road, as we get later on in the season.”

The Lady Bears kept their stranglehold on the Lady Mustangs in the final two quarters en route to the easy win.

“Just a good game all around,” John McHenry said. “We worked on the things we wanted to get going on. We’re having to run a little bit different offense than we’ve ran in the past. We’re having to be more disciplined and it paid off. We’re getting our 3-point shooters open, getting our drives in there and we’re taking care of the ball a little better.”

Cydney McHenry and Atkinson chipped in with 14 and 13 points for the Lady Bears.

Dolores was back at it Saturday afternoon and it picked up where it left off at Ouray.

Behind 19 points from Katlynn McGee and 14 by Cydney McHenry, the Lady Bears laid another beat down. Dolores won at Ouray, 58-29.

The Lady Bears continue conference play tonight, as they host the Ignacio Lady Bobcats (3-3, 1-1 2A/1A SJBL) at 5:30 p.m.
