The Cortez Public Library is offering a variety of learning and entertainment opportunities for locals throughout the month of January.
WORKSHOP ABOUT HOW TO WRITE YOUR MEMOIR
A writing workshop will be offered beginning at 3:30 p.m. today, Jan. 10, at the library. Writing instructor Linda Rose is now reaching out to the areas inhabitants to teach the entitled Writing Your Life Story.
Rose is offering this class to anyone and everyone interested in learning more about how to write a memoir about their life.
Rose will be teaching a number of strategies to writers of all levels throughout the four-week class. The series is intended to teach people how to write a biography and how to stay motivated throughout the writing process.
Rose has taught numerous workshops in Florida and tells all locals interested in attending to bring enthusiasm and ideas.

AUSTRALIAN FILM FEATURES LIVES OF FOUR WOMEN
The library will be showing the Australian film Little Sparrows directed by Yu-Hsiu Camille Chen at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 10. The library is at 202 N. Park St.
The summary from the publisher, Film Movement, reads, In the middle of an Australian summer, we meet three sisters. Nina is widowed with two young children. Anna is an aspiring actress unhappily married to a filmmaker. Christine is a medical student who has yet to fully come to terms with her sexuality. When their mother Susans breast cancer returns, the family is faced with the reality of their last Christmas together. As each daughter confronts personal change and growth, Susan guides them by revealing a secret of her own.

FILM HONORS WORK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING
On the weekend of Martin Luther Kings birthday, the Montelores Human Relations Coalition is sponsoring three films concerning civil rights of African-Americans, Native Americans and Gay and Lesbian people to commemorate Kings work on behalf of the civil rights of all Americans.
The Coalition will present the film Reel Injuns at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, in the librarys conference room.
The film portrays the ways that Hollywood has stereotyped Native Americans. After the film, Montelores Human Relations President Art Neskahi will lead a panel discussion.
The other two films in the series will be shown at different locations. At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, a film on the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s will be shown at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church at 110 W. North St. At 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, the award-winning film Two Spirits will be screened at the Cortez Cultural Center.
CELTIC GUITARIST JERRY BARLOW TO PERFORM
Jerry Barlow, Celtic finger-style guitarist, will be playing a free concert to the public at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the library.
Barlows repertoire is the traditional music of the British Isles and his own Celtic-inspired compositions. His expressive arrangements of lively jigs, spirited reels and haunting airs have been described as music to soothe the soul, warm the heart and lift the spirit, according to the library.

January Storytime
The librarys storytime program will feature Winter activities as its January theme. Storytime is held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m.
Crayons Revisited will be discussed on Friday, Jan. 13, and Lets Visit the Library! will be the focal point on Friday, Jan. 20. Storytime will wrap up the month with Exercise With Me! on Friday, Jan. 27. For more information, contact the library at 565-8117.
