Insensitivity to disabilities is inexcusable

Dear Editor:

I suffered severe injuries while on military duty at the age of 43. Those injuries caused me to be retired/disabled for life. I had folks and businesses tell me, “You are too young to be on Social Security’ you can’t be disabled!” When my injuries caused problems and I had to use a wheelchair, some people ignored me or refused to assist me. Yet others went out of their way to open a door or pull something off a top shelf for me.

The point is that a disability may not always be obvious. The disabled person may be trying to live their life as “normal” as possible without calling attention to their disability. Parking in a “disabled” spot when you don’t need it or being insensitive to a situation, whether it is in the library or shopping mall, are inexcusable actions.
