With a warm sun smiling down as if to signal the beginning of summer, roughly 180 runners descended on Parque de Vida in Cortez on May 19 to take part in the third annual Cortez Color Run.

Organized as a fundraiser for the Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 School District, the run featured competitors of all ages and abilities, who raced three laps around the park while having colored corn starch thrown on them by roughly 20 volunteers.

Leading the pack of runners was high school junior Caisey Duran, who qualified for state last season as a member of the M-CHS cross-country team. Also a two-time state qualifier in swimming, Duran explained that the Color Run experience was not one that she would soon forget.

“I love this event because it’s not running, which I love to do. It’s also fun because of all the color and having all of your friends around. I would highly encourage other people to do it.”

According to run organizer Barbara Chappell, all the proceeds generated by the run have been placed into an account that will be used to fund extracurricular activities.

“A board will be created and extracurricular activities in the district can apply to the board for funding to help support their operations,” Chappell said. “For instance, if the choir needs funding to support their trips, they can apply for money.”

Among the most exciting elements of the event was a celebratory conclusion in which every competitor was provided with a bag of colored starch to throw into the air. Bags were thrown on Chappell’s signal, which created a multicolored cloud above the park that was visible several hundred yards away.

“What isn’t cool about this,” Chappell said. “It’s just so fun to see people getting exercise and enjoying themselves.”

According to Chappell, the Color Run will return next year. The event may take place in the dark and include glow in the dark features.

We’re already making plans for next year,” Chappell said. “We’re looking at some different ideas to add to our already fun tradition.”
