Cortez BMX wraps up season

Another successful season is in the books with Cortez BMX (bicycle motocross). Its racing season wrapped up on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The year began with a complete track redesign and a new building replacing a fire-damaged shed. There were 21 races, three state champions, and 14 top-10 state placers.

The Colorado BMX state championships were held in Grand Junction on Aug. 28. Chase Gallimore, Amber, Logan and Dylan Fuller, Tyler Wilson, Cameron Fury, Jalen Bladerrama, Cheyenne Tanner, Mark Bennett, Landon Sanchez, Taron Lard, Cole Baxter, Aaron McClain and Logan Willbanks placed top-10 in their respective classes. Logan Willbanks also won a state championship in the 16-year-old cruiser class. Kamri Willbanks won the 7-year-old girls title, and Chase Moore took home the 7-year-old boys championship.

There were eight total motos Sept. 24. The first-place finishers in each moto were Amber Fuller, 8-year-old novice; Will Brown, 9-year-old novice; Gabe Frizzell, 9-year-old intermediate; Swayde Noyes, 10-year-old intermediate; Derek Fuller, 12-year-old intermediate; Bladerrama, 13-year-old novice; Sanchez, 13-year-old intermediate; and, McClain, 15-year-old expert.

Also recognized during the event were the top-10 riders of the season. The riders earned points based on finishes only in local races. At No. 1, Bennett; No. 2, Moore; No. 3, Baxter; No. 4, Chris Bennett; No. 5, McClain; No. 6, Balderrama; No. 7, Noyes; No. 8, Amber Fuller; No. 8, Kadan Chandler; and, No. 8, Jackson Vermeule.
