September brings a new season for the Ute Mountain Rodeo team.
The fall rodeo schedule includes competition at Cortez, Gunnison, Hotchkiss and Craig.
Current team members in the junior high division are Cassie Finley, Bailee Karo, Cayce Lockhart and Breanna Maxwell. The high school division includes Kacey Schurr, Whitney Finley, Jake Cruzan, Wyatt Mattausch, Dax Koskie, Keenan Elliot, Trevor Holiday, Tanner Lockhart, Emma Reim, Cammie Maxwell, Wiley Kirks, Laycee Jones and Dennison Yazzie.
The first rodeo was in Cortez at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds on Sept. 3-5.
Junior high finishes for barrel racing were, Cayce Lockhart, sixth, 16.583; and, Cassie Finley, seventh, 21.573. In goat tying, Cassie Finley, fourth, 13.15. In ribbon roping, the team of Jace Norrell and Cayce Lockhart took fifth in 21.740.
On Sept. 4, results for barrel racing were Cayce Lockhart, fourth, 15.90; and, Cassie Finley, eighth, 22.106. For goat tying, Cassie Finley was fourth at 16.56. Norrell and Cayce Lockhart took a no time in ribbon roping.
High school division results on Sept. 3 were, saddle broncs, Tanner Lockhart, first, score of 67. Barrel racing, Schurr, fourth, 15.925; and, Whitney Finley, 15th, 17.061. In breakaway roping, Whitney Finley, 10th, 12.81 (took a 10 second penalty at the barrier). In goat tying, Schurr, seventh, 10.040. In pole bending, Reim, 11th, 24.225.
Sept. 4, competition included bull riding, Mattausch, second, 61. Barrel racing saw Schurr, 15th, 16.467; Reim, 19th, 17.484; and, Whitney Finley, 23rd, 26.636. In breakaway roping, it was Whitney Finley, seventh, 5.40. For goat tying, Schurr, fifth, 9.130. In pole bending, Reim, 14th, 28.325.
Sept. 5, results are as follows, dally team roping, Harlie Williams and Cruzan were second in 11.960. Barrel racing finishes were Schurr, 12th, 16.203, Whitney Finley, 19th, 16.819; and, Reim, 20th, 17.391. In goat tying, Schurr, third, 9.14. Pole bending had Reim take 10th in 22.957.
The Ute Mountain high school team traveled to Gunnison on Sept. 10-11. Team scores the first day were, saddle broncs, Tanner Lockhart, first, 67. Bull riding, Trevor Holiday, second, 68. Dally team roping, Williams and Cruzan, sixth, 13.530. Barrel racing, Schurr, fourth, 18.352. Goat tying, Schurr, eighth, 13.360.
Second day performances from Schurr included, barrel racing, 17th, 19.218; and, goat tying, fifth, 10.210.
