Mancos Public Library begins Community Cinema season

The Mancos Public Library and Rocky Mountain PBS will kick off the Community Cinema season with a screening of the film “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.

“Pray the Devil Back to Hell” chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women – ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim – came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country’s civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about an agreement during the stalled peace talks. A panel-led discussion will follow the film. This is a free event.

For more information, call the Mancos Public Library at 533-7600 or visit www.mancoslibrary.org.

In his presentation, Lee will review the history of Old World megalithic architecture from its apparent beginnings in Turkey almost 12,000 years ago through its spectacular culmination at Roman Baalbek in the third century A.D. Lee will focus on Baalbek, a little-known but astounding complex in Lebanon’s Bekka Valley. The site is notable not only for its colossal architecture containing the largest cut stones ever hewn by man, but for the mysteries surrounding how, why, when, and by whom portions of the structures were built. Baalbek is a true “megalithic mystery.”
