Senior running back Tam Phan scored three touchdowns, including returning the opening kickoff for a score, in the Panthers 46-8 route of the Zuni Thunderbirds in Zuni, N.M., on Friday night.

With the win, Montezuma-Cortez High School (1-1) evened its record and Casey Coulter recorded his first win as Panthers coach.

“We just basically had to line up and play some football,” he said. “We were going to run what we were going to run offensively and defensively. Our kids are buying in and stepped up. It’s a good win for us.”

M-CHS will stay on the road with a visit to 3A Delta (0-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

“Going into Delta, is actually probably the best game we could possibly ask for right now,” Coulter said. “They’re not overpowering teams, but they’re a very well coached team. We have to execute to win this ball game.”
