Helmer receives P.E.O. Star Scholarship

Alicia Helmer, a Mancos High School graduate, was announced as the recipient of the P.E.O. Star Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. Helmer is a freshman at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, where she plans to study engineering this fall. The scholarship was presented by Judy Osterhoudt at an awards ceremony at the high school. Alicia is the daughter of Catherine Yost and was recommended by Chapter EV of Cortez. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success. The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is an international philanthropic and educational organization which promotes increased educational opportunities for women. The P.E.O. Sisterhood has given nearly $190 million in financial assistance to more than 80,000 women.
