Former Cortez student Misty Garver graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies from Adams State College, in Alamosa. The spring 2011 commencement was held Saturday, May 14, in Plachy Hall. Adams State awarded 290 undergraduate degrees in the spring ceremony.

“By emphasizing personal growth and civic engagement, ASC helps young people define both themselves and how they fit into the bigger picture — one of our greatest roles,” Colorado state Sen. Gail Schwartz said in the commencement address, according to a written statement from the college. “It reminds me of a large puzzle.”

To demonstrate that theme, Schwartz had placed a small puzzle piece under each graduate’s chair.

Tim Walters, chair, conveyed the greetings from the Board of Trustees for Adams State College. Lisa Chirieleison, who served this past year as president of AS&F, delivered the 2011 class message. “Laudemus Te” from Vivaldi’s Gloria, was performed by Christine Keitges and Beth Robison, sopranos. A reception followed the ceremony for graduates and their guests in the Plachy Hall Field House.
