Filling gaps in pro bono legal aid

Dear Editor:

I appreciate the Chief Justice’s and Eric Hogue’s comments about legal pro bono work by lawyers in the area. I concur that it is done on a catch-as-catch-can basis. There are those who do. Since I have shut my Cortez office and restricted my practice, I have been attempting to fill in some of the gaps.

St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, at 110 W. North St. in Cortez, decided about a year ago to extend our outreach to the community beyond Grace’s Kitchen. One of our local physicians provides free medical exams as his work permits. I have made myself available to provide legal information to people with questions about the law. I do not do this to get cases but simply to help educate people as to some of the legal avenues available to them that they can do on their own and sometimes point out that they really do need a lawyer.

I am available on Thursday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m. at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St., Cortez.
