Come on down to the Montezuma-Cortez High School gym and be entertained by the Harlem Ambassadors and the Montezuma Mavericks Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors; ticket prices are higher at the door, so get yours now at the Cortez Cultural Center’s gift shop.

The Harlem Ambassadors’ show is a fun, family basketball game filled with comedy, music, skits and interactive games with the kids. Don’t miss this fantastic performance as they play against our local Montezuma Mavericks! Our local team is coached by John Bond, and players include Cortez Mayor Danny Porter, Orly Lucero, Jack Schuenemeyer, Manny Neves, Jason Wayman, John Patton, Stephen Hatch, Dean Palmquist, Cody Foster, Emily Pearson, Julie Engle, Julie Loyd, Justin Schmit, Blaine House and Darius Cawford. Come and cheer for our hometown team!

This evening, March 3, from 5 to 6:30, an art reception will be held in the Cultural Center gallery to honor the M-CHS art students. The work shows how truly talented these students are. The show is beautiful. Come by and see it for yourself.

The Southwest Art League will meet at 7 p.m. March 8 in the gallery. The featured artist in the gift shop for the month of March is Barbara Lynch. Barbara started painting in high school after persuading her mother that she should be taking art lessons and not music lessons. She feels that there is no mood enhancer like creating something, and paintings are what she creates best. In 1992, Barbara moved to Cortez and joined the Ute Mountain Artist’s League — now the Southwest Artists League — and now paints mostly for pleasure. She has had some success selling her paintings, mostly small watercolors. Lynch is always gratified when someone thinks enough of one of her paintings to pay money for it and, hopefully, enjoy it for many years.

The Friends of Hawkins will meet at noon Friday. They will discuss plans for the upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day fundraising events. Proceeds from the events will go toward matching grant funds to repair the roof and stabilize the pueblo at the Hawkins Preserve. If you would like to contribute, please call the Cultural Center at 565-1151 and ask for Linda.

We are accepting registrations for the Ute Mountain Mesa Verde Birding Festival. If you did not receive a brochure in the mail, you can also register online or by calling the Cultural Center. Thank you to Linda Raczek and the Birding Festival committee. They have done an awesome job putting together this year’s festival. There are great new tours as well as old favorites, and they will all fill up fast. So don’t delay — send in your registration today!
