One pedestrian was killed and another was taken to the hospital Saturday after being hit on Main Avenue near 21st Street.

A driver in a white Chevrolet Suburban with a Texas license plate was traveling north when he jumped the curb, went through a brick barrier and in between a light pole and white pickup truck. He came to a stop wedged between Royal Motel and a sign, Detective Josh Newman with the Durango Police Department said.

Kassia Boani was walking her dog near the crash when one of men passed her on the sidewalk in what looked to be jogging clothes.

She didn’t see the impact, but she heard the bricks of the barrier break.

“There was bricks flying everywhere,” she recalled.

It is unknown if the two men struck by the SUV were walking together, Newman said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Larry Phelps said the authorities have not identified the men. The one who died looked to be in his 40s or 50s, Phelps said.

The person taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center was suffering from severe injuries, said Capt. Justin Wickes with the Durango Fire Protection District.

The crash happened between 20th and 21st streets about 4 p.m., and traffic was backed up for a time.
