Colorado State Patrol officer James Saunders and Cortez Dairy Queen owner Seth Wilkerson display the stack of 80 $5 gift cards that are intended to go to suspects in traffic cases whose children and passengers are properly secured and belted in.

The Colorado State Patrol and Dairy Queen have joined forces with a program that attempts to sweeten the deal for motorists who are pulled over and face a traffic ticket and all the costs that can go with it.

The Montezuma Injury Prevention Coalition is sponsoring $5 gift cards from Dairy Queen if suspected motorists’ children are properly secured in a car seat and all passengers are wearing seat belts.

Seth Wilkerson, owner of the Cortez Dairy Queen, said he wanted to give back to the community and support officers by matching the funds that the coalition put into the program.

Colorado State Patrol officer James Saunders said the motorists might not get out of a ticket, but it might lessen the blow.
