Old Man Winter fools Rico

OK, OK, maybe I spoke too soon, maybe it’s wishful thinking, or maybe I think this way every year. Up until last night, the streets around town had begun to dry out some. I spotted my first robin bird out in my tree, and — oh, boy — even the calendar concurs; it is officially spring here in the Rocky Mountains!

Opening my eyes this morning, I looked out the window, and lo and behold, we have about four inches of new snow on the ground. Boohoo! I was already deciding what flowers to plant. I should know better, but I always love the idea of getting my hopes up that mud season will only last for about one month instead of two. I think Old Man Winter reminds us that he will dish out as much moisture as he wants, whenever he wants. Guess I am grateful.

A reminder for everyone, the new hours for the Rico Library are as follows: Wednesday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We all get caught up in the monotony of our lives, the day in, day out schedule of go to work, come home, etc. I think it’s good for the mind to change it up a little. Instead of getting on the computer or watching television, support our local library and look for a good book. I find it quite relaxing to dig into a great story, fiction or nonfiction. It takes you to another time or place, and expands your imagination. All in all, it’s something a lot of us forget to do.

Longtime residents Susan and Bobby Robertson recently had a visit from their son Jessie. Jessie and a friend were visiting from Tucson, where Jessie now resides. Susan and her other son Dillon drove back with Jessie to Arizona. I’m sure they all had a wonderful time catching up, and enjoyed the warm weather in Tucson. I think I would have a hard time coming back so soon from warm, wonderful Tucson!

Richard Tokar (TM2 Mancos) and Todd Jones (TM3 Cortez), employees of the Colorado Department of Transportation, held a meeting March 22 in the Rico area CDOT shop with Force Account from Farmington N.M., and Alert company from Red Valley. These two entities are subcontractors to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. The meeting was held to help the subcontractors gather information on equipment and operations necessary for maintaining roads, and snow removal in winter conditions. These two groups are working together to try to open the Buffalo Pass that connects Lukachukai to Red Valley. As of this time, the pass is closed during winter months. Many users of this road in the summer will be thrilled to eventually have year-round access.

Next week, Marlene will be back to doing the Rico Report. My family and I will be indisposed (having fun in Utah) for spring break, and Marlene will just have to give up her respite time for just a little while. I bet she’s so excited! Love you mom! Until my return, take care and enjoy spring time in the Rockies. It really is here — I promise!

Kim Jones is filling in for her mother, regular Rico Report columnist Marlene Hazen this week.
