We residents of Rico, once again, want to thank the Color Guard and entire staff that takes the time to come up here and help us honor our own fallen comrades. It was, as always, touching to observe the service and, with the beauty of the San Juans in the background, extremely touching.

After the service, the Rico Women’s Club served the guard and those who assisted in the background like Sheriff Martin and his deputy, Dennis Swank and Ken Hazen to name a few. The luncheon was held up in the courthouse, and the ladies served the Yellowman specialty Navajo Tacos with all the trimmings, and a lot of TLC.

By the way, there were snow flurries earlier in the morning and by the time the service began, the sun was peeking out of the clouds and it was 42 degrees! Our chamber of commerce (if we had one) would fire me with all of these negative-like statistics I insist on revealing.

Our Mayor, Barbara Betts, has returned from a pleasant hiatus after spending time with her longtime friends in Texas. We are sure that Michael is glad to have his gourmet cook home again and eager to serve him her wonderful dinners.

This is an interesting story, and it is true. A lady dropped by the post office last week. Amy Larsen was on duty that day. She asked this nice lady if she could help her, and the lady said: “We are traveling through your lovely San Juans, and we are concerned about your aspen trees. Are they suffering from some disease or other malady because we have seen no leaves.” Amy answered nicely that it is simply too cold! They are awaiting some nice warm sunshine, don’t we know.

Margaret and Paul Dow, and daughter Barbara (Neal) Muldoon were in town this weekend checking out the house and just truly enjoying being back in Rico. Before they retired, they were very active in Rico doing things for the community church and others. Rob Huber bought Barbara and Neal’s home years ago after they determined that they must move to Montrose.

We have learned from Mark Schwab, whose family is close to Phyllis and Harold Off of Rico and Farmington, that Harold is not at all well. Our strongest wishes to the Off family that Harold is comfortable and, hopefully, feeling better. They have had a home up here for many, many years.

Marlene Hazen has lived in Rico for two decades. An active member of the community, she participates in organizations such as the Rico Women’s Club and Rico Historical Society.
