Doug Jorgensen and Monique Martinez have opened Pharmacy skate shop in Cortez.
The store, at 40 E. Main St., is offering skateboard decks and trucks, as well as a selection of hats, shirts and shoes. Pharmacy has other locations in Southern California and Nevada, and Jorgensen worked with the company in California for ten years.
Jorgensen relocated to Cortez to get out of the city. Now, he is offering a local option for skaters.
“We wanted to offer something in town,” he said.
The store is offering Pharmacy skateboards as well as several other skating brands.
Jorgensen said it’s great that Cortez has a skate park, because not every city has one. But the park is an intermediate-level park, with few features for beginner skaters, he said. Most kids who are just starting out skating can’t drop in to the steep walls at the park, he said.
Jorgensen hopes to be involved in an expansion of the skate park in the future so that more people can use it, he said.
“We’re really trying to keep kids skating and keep skateboarding alive,” he said.
