Journal should have independent views

The Cortez Journal’s word for word reprint of the Durango Herald’s recent editorial endorsing Hillary Clinton with an enthusiasm bordering on sycophancy was disappointing and, frankly, embarrassing to read.

The principled stand would have been to abstain from endorsing either candidate. Both are corrupt, proven habitual mendicants and unfit for the Oval Office. Both are widely loathed and distrusted by most of the electorate according to every poll I’ve seen, and whoever wins will become the president by default rather than popular choice. He or she will certainly become the most unpopular president in history immediately after taking the oath of office.

Over time, it appears that the Journal has slowly become the Durango Herald, with a few local stories and High Country News articles included. I well understand the dilemma that newspapers across the country are in and can empathize with the blessings and perils of corporate ownership. But I was hoping that at least the Journal’s political endorsements would have shown some slight degree of independence from the Ballantine Communications orthodoxy.

As a Herald subscriber and noting the redundancies above, I’m beginning to wonder if there’s much point in subscribing to the Journal any longer.
